A nomadic globetrotting family living in an ex-military expedition truck. We are Dave, Jess, Isla (aged 4) and Otis the Hungarian Vizsla. 📍Tajikistan and the Pamir Highway Dave is a professional photographer, Jess is a full time mum to Isla. Otis makes lots of noise 🤣

This is us. In our happy place. Exploring unseen parts of the world in our expedition truck home on wheels. Chasing adventure, learning on the road and spending quality family time together as a unit. The home is small, but the garden is enormous. Want to know more about this lifestyle, the pros and cons of life on the road or the challenges it presents? Feel free to ask! #roadschooling #overlandlife #alternativelifestyle #expeditionfamily image

If you see a small ford you have to go through at a maximum speed. It’s the rules. Agree? #truckstr #overlandlife #alternativeliving #wetfeet

Four more, different, images of the Dalmatian Pelicans from Lake Kerkini, Greece. I have slight misgivings about them being fed, but if you read my previous post about them, you’ll know they are listed as Vulnerable and need all the help they can get to survive, with only between 3000-5000 breeding pairs remaining in the world. #wildlifephotography #travelwithpurpose #environmentalism #birdstr #alternativelife image

The most painful part of living in an expedition truck… putting fuel in! But… since we’ve just got in to Turkey, it’s cheaper than Greece and MUCH cheaper than England! 🙌 #zapsforfuel #notallpositives #alternativelifestyle #lifeontheroad #overlandfamily

GM Nostr 🌅 I’ve previously mentioned wind farms as great places to hunt out and park at night, but we’re also seemingly developing quite a line on finding disused quarries too. Do you have questions about this lifestyle, or the truck etc etc etc? If so, let us know and we’ll happily answer them! Kavala, Greece. #alternativelifstyle #offgridliving #truckstr #overland image

On the south side of Lake Kerkini, near the town of Irakleia, there’s a lot of good parking spots around the lake. And they give you the chance to sit and watch the abundant birdlife of the lake, including Dalmatian and White Pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants. White tailed eagles, lesser spotted woodpeckers and on and on and on. It really is quite the impressive birding location, and a quiet, safe spot to stop for a night or three. #offgridliving #wheretopark image

I took a boat trip out on to Lake Kerkini this moring to see and photograph the Dalmatian Pelicans. They’re such interesting birds with that tuft of hair, ridiculous, big bills and amazing eyes. And they look so menacing when they stare straight at you! They’re also the largest pelican species and quite probably the largest freshwater bird in the world, weighing in around 9.5kg with a wingspan to rival some of the albatrosses. They’re listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN list and their population is still decreasing due to exploitation at all life stages. It’s estimated there are 3000-5000 breeding pairs left. In Mongolian markets for example, the going rate for a Dalmatian Pelican bill is 10 horses and 30 sheep. While Lake Kerkini is not their largest population (that’s Lake Prespa on the border of Greece and Albania) there is still a good population here, that given the efforts of locals who run boat trips to see them and conservation efforts to provide breeding and nesting platforms on the lake, is holding steady. #environmentalawareness #seetheworldwithdifferenteyes #wildlife #photography #decentralisedliving image

This is our last 12months of travelling overland as a family in our truck. There has been adventures and experiences that will last for a lifetime… the real question is, what do the next 12 months hold for us and where are we going? #worldadvenutre #overlandfamily #decentralised

Parked next to Lake Kerkini last night I sat in the shore this morning, camera in hand. Lake Kerkini is home to Dalmatian Pelicans - quite a lot of them in fact! While they didn’t come too close to shore, they were still fun to sit and watch for a while. And tomorrow we’ll all be heading out on a boat trip to the lake to see them much closer, and allow me chance to get some better pictures! image

How do we find parkups to stay for a night or three? There are several apps out there that help and we tend to use each of them along with a good dose of google map and open street map satellite view scouring. But, our go-to first port of call is usually Park4Night. #offgridliving #overlandlife image

GM Nostr 🌅 You have no idea how excited I get, as a photographer, when I see a puddle to use for pictures and videos! This beach park up, just south of Thessaloniki, was a great place to chill and hang out for a bit. Right by the sea it was perfect for running Otis and letting Isla play in the sand… even if it was a bit chilly! #gmnostr #outdoorliving #photography #decentralisedlife #adventurefamily

Otis loves to run. Being a working breed (although in his case a bit too highly strung to be a working Vizsla) he’s even happier when he has a “job” to do… like wearing his saddlebags. And bonus… the extra weight tires him out a little quicker! #dogstr #itsadogslife image

Flashback to nearly a year ago, parked under a spectacular sand dune in Western Sahara with nobody else for miles. It was so glorious we spent several nights there just relaxing and exploring. #offgridlifestyle #familyadventures #decentralisedlife #photography image

A new addition to the kit… possibly frivolous, but rather convenient. We have a lot of solar and battery. And we have an outdoor fire pit/bbq but we’ve found ourselves cooking outside more and more and not always wanting to light the fire. We’ve been using a little backpacking camping stove but while it’s great if you need to carry it, it doesn’t have the power or control for “proper” cooking. So we’ve bought this Primus Tupike stove which is really well reviewed and so far loving up to its promise. #outdoorcooking #outdoorlife image

Parked up in an old, disused quarry made for not only a great background for pictures, but also a very quiet night, well sheltered from the wind and with no-one else in sight. Perfect. #offgridlife #unseenplaces #adventurefamily image

Parked near the Hot Gates, the site of the Battle of Thermopylae where 300 Spartans lead by King Leonidas fought Xerxes’ Persian Army. Although they were ultimately defeated, the battle stands as testament to the fighting prowess of the Spartans and the tactical acumen that allowed a massively outnumbered force to withstand onslaught for so long by using the terrain to their advantage. The Persians were finally defeated in two further battles - a sea battle in the Straits of Salamis, the island we were on two days ago, and then in the Battle of Plataea where the full might of the Spartan army joined a unified Greek force to defeat the General Maradonius and so end the Greco-Persian wars in 479BC. #livinghistory #exploretheworld #outdoorclassrooms image

GM Nostr 🌅 What better way to start the day than a dip in the crystal clear hot springs at Thermopylae? Also, meet another part of the team - Jess! She’s full-time mum to Isla and provides the voice of reason when I come up with crazy ideas. #offgridliving #decentralisedlife #expeditiontruck image

Glorious forest track on Salamina Island the was totally not on our radar but made for an exciting Sunday drive! These unexpected gems are one of the most enjoyable aspects of travelling in a 4x4 truck. #nostruck #sundaydrive #adventureeveryday

The start of a long day that ended nearly 300km from where it started, soaking in the hot springs near the battle site of the Leonidas’ 300 Spartans against Xerxes’ Persians army. #offgridliving #alternativelifestyle #familyadventuresdaily image
