Combined review for both Thunderbolts and the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day... Both were "OK to good", enjoyed the latter more than the former, but what struck me about both is how the MCU these days is trying to deal with "darker" subject material.... Scenes of both intense hand-to-hand / gunplay violence (as in Thunderbolts) and street-level carnage (as in Spider-Man) which in any other R-rated movie c.f. John Wick would result in lots of blood and obvious death are still consistently downplayed, but in a way that doesn't make any sense... Like, you know people are getting gunned down and/or crushed with falling building debris, but there's not a drop of blood. Also was watching through season 2 of Peacemaker, which is also just "OK to meh", but what's different about current-era DC Cinema is it isn't afraid to shy away from R-rated (and sometimes quite frankly gratuitous) sex and violence. IDK if this is strictly good or bad, but it at least adds a level of realism that can be refreshing.

One thing I've been realizing recently is that I consistently under-rate my past self... Just re-reading some 5th grade journal entries, and I'm impressed by the clear exposition, self-examination, and even running jokes I interspersed into the entries. Sometimes it's easy to over-calibrate on our past failures and, as a result, underappreciate the person we were at different stages in our life.

The Bitcoin self-custody "meta" seems to increasingly be, build your own hardware (e.g. @SeedSigner ) + bring your own entropy. And if you can't handle that, perhaps trusted custodianship is best for you. BitAddress back in the day seems to have gotten this basically right?

Since both of my pour-over carafes have chipped recently, I'm doing frech-press... But I feel like it isn't quite as strong as other methods. Anything I'm "probably" doing wrong? #coffee #coffeestr

Wow I've had some bad interviews recently... Got called back about a role that's exclusively about "XYZ", which I don't even list on my resume but have several adjacent scientific skill/knowledge sets. So then interview is just 1/2 hour of technical grilling about XYZ, which I could kind of stumble through, but it's like... You already know I'm not an expert in this, so what's the point? The fact that I was called at all says to me that they really can't find people with "XYZ" in the first place.

This reflects my own experience where I find it's increasingly difficult to view the web with a VPN. I think a lot of sites aren't taking the care of this guy, and just blanket-blocking anything that might be a VPN, which sucks. We need privacy-preserving means to say "I'm a human"... And I think Nostr might have some of the only solutions in this regard, unless you want Sam Altman to scan your eyeball. View quoted note โ†’

Little detail I never realized in #mst3k Cave Dwellers: When Dr. Forrester introduces the movie he says he didn't see the whole thing, just the opening credits, so he assumes it's a "a buddy picture -- like the Defiant Ones" This is because the opening credits of this (and Pod People) feature these weird posterized clips from *other movies* that have nothing to do with the actual film.

People think AI is going to be something independent, separate from humanity. That's a category error. AI will reflect human desires, patterns and economic structures... For good, bad or ugly.
