This was most noticeable when the audio would get loud. Higher frequencies tended to create a bit of distortion/buzz that made it less enjoyable during the intense parts. I still enjoyed the listen because it wasn't unlistenable, but it just wasn't as clear and strong of a sound as I normally like.
Then, out of the blue, I pop an LP on the Victrola and it sounds literally flawless. One of the loudest and most intense songs by MONO (currently my favorite band) is "Com(?)" from their second album, One Step More and You Die. It has some very loud and intense parts as it builds up, but as I listen to it, the only distortion I hear is the intentional distortion present on the recording.
I didn't do anything differently, either! I just did my usual cleaning routine and that's it. It's really strange how this just suddenly started working as if I got an upgrade when I really did not. ๐คจ
