The lead hand in1900s style of bare knuckle boxing looks silly, but was very effective at the time. Glove padding allows for blocking closer to the face as it absorbs the impact. Without gloves this doesn’t work, so fighters used the forearm of the lead hand to frame and block punches. The extended lead arm was primarily a defensive technique.
