Here are some links to vendors and projects im finding interesting right now: - Obviously openwrt - Router running openwrt - Glinet wifi 7 ap running openwrt (but is ugly) - This page on openwrt website about wifi roaming wich is more informatitive than Wikipedia but still not enough - Openwisp management software for openwrt

I've gone down the Wi-Fi rabbit hole again today. I'm not looking to purchase any hardware yet. The same 802.11ac TP-Link EAP225 I have all over my home are working just fine for now. I'm not a Ubiquiti fanboy, in fact maybe the opposite. I don't want to buy proprietary things or run hardware that's able to change the terms of the sale after the sale via forced updates. I don't want to pay a subscription to manage my Wi-Fi airspace. I want to use an open source solution that gives me the control I want but then allows me to break things on my own terms. I've been looking to plan my next upgrade to my APs in conjunction with my upgrade to my main switch and router. So I have given this some thought. What is it that I'm trying to solve? Let's define that. In my next hardware purchase: - Open source firmware: I'm trying to eliminate the requirement of proprietary firmware for my access points. Sorry TP-Link, your webpage sucks and I bet everyone else's does too. I've used TomatoWRT, DD-WRT, and OpenWRT over the years, and it seems like the only project surviving is OpenWRT. Even better, some vendors are shipping with OpenWRT preinstalled. These vendors doing this will be prime candidates for my future purchase. - Latest Wi-Fi spec: I want to support the Wi-Fi 7 spec 802.11be. This is primarily to get up to date with the latest and greatest for all of my expensive devices. I'll aim for the highest end of the newness on install. It'll make sense if I'm going to leave it in place for 6 to 7 years like I did with the last ones (maybe 802.11bn by the time I'm ready). - 10GB PoE: It seems ever since 802.11n that the indoor range is shrinking, meaning more access points per house. I have three Ethernet cables coming from my main switch to other areas of my home. Aside from PoE and the highest gigabit speed upgrade I can afford, I'll leave their locations alone, but these next APs need to be 2.5, 5, or 10 Gbps and PoE. - Management software: It seems running some sort of management console like the Ubiquiti cloud gateway or TP-Link Omada hardware or software on my network plays a role in managing features like 802.11r or 802.11v. I've never done this, but from my reading, if I can find software I'm comfortable with running, it seems like a great way to allow greater network throughput in a Wi-Fi network with several access points in close range. There is a software I've come across in my reading called OpenWISP. I'm not sure if there is a secret gotcha in the service so I can't really say I'm going with this topology just yet, but it seems to do the bare minimum of what I need for 802.11v for OpenWRT installs. I'm not sure if I can run this software easily in a VM or what, but that would likely be my next plan of action for a test deployment. Today I may not take any action, but once I start thinking about it I know I'm preparing to. What are your thoughts? Do you have several OpenWRT access points, and whoโ€™s the hardware vendor? Are there any shipping with OpenWRT on Wi-Fi 7 yet? Are your access points multigigabit?
