Game theory should be a mandatory part of the high school curriculum.

I finally finished “In order to live” by Yeonmi Park. She tells her harrowing story of escaping the communist, authoritarian, hellscape that is North Korea. Getting out of North Korea was only the beginning for her and her mother as she had to escape human trafficking while in China, cross the Mongolian desert in the winter in the middle of the night, and face the threat of deportation - and likely execution - back to north Korea at every turn. She’s incredibly courageous for telling her story, both in standing up in the face of threats from the regime and in reckoning with her own inner struggles. I highly recommended this book. If nothing else it made me even more grateful that I was lucky enough to be born in the west. #bookstr image

I don’t really understand this. Importing Wikipedia to a new place will bias it? Does he mean that putting it all here and then having only the people on Nostr edit it will make it biased? View quoted note →

I’ve been thinking about this razor or heuristic in education for a while. It needs a catchy name, but it’s goes something like this. “Every popular trend in education is causing a nontrivial amount of harm.” A corollary to that is that educators must work to decipher and mitigate that harm as well as determine whether the tradeoff is worth it. Another corollary is that groupthink, social pressure to conform, and confirmation bias will make that task difficult. However, if one doesn’t speak out then you risk contributing to pluralistic ignorance, where people recognize a harm but assume everyone else thinks it’s fine because no one individual speaks up. To make matters worse, educators are disproportionately friendly and don’t like “making waves.” #education #teaching #grownostr

Remember to turn your clocks forward tonight so that your kids’ sleep patterns can be screwed up for one to two weeks.

Last week was a long one. Busy from morning until night with my wife and I work schedules opposite each other most of the week. Busy time of the school year on top of it as our trimester ends next year. Had work and meeting for the decision education fellowship I’m a part of. And on and on. But, it makes me more grateful for the weekend and to have a bit of mental space. Hope you all have a great weekend. #coffeechain image

“Because let me introduce you to… the hell that is AI-generated children’s YouTube content. YouTube for kids is quickly becoming a stream of synthetic content. Much of it now consists of wooden digital characters interacting in short nonsensical clips without continuity or purpose. Toddlers are forced to sit and watch this runoff because no one is paying attention. And the toddlers themselves can’t discern that characters come and go and that the plots don’t make sense and that it’s all just incoherent dream-slop. The titles don’t match the actual content, and titles that are all the parents likely check, because they grew up in a culture where if a YouTube video said BABY LEARNING VIDEOS and had a million views it was likely okay. Now, some of the nonsense AI-generated videos aimed at toddlers have tens of millions of views.” And later in the article… “All around the nation there are toddlers plunked down in front of iPads being subjected to synthetic runoff, deprived of human contact even in the media they consume. There’s no other word but dystopian. Might not actual human-generated cultural content normally contain cognitive micro-nutrients (like cohesive plots and sentences, detailed complexity, reasons for transitions, an overall gestalt, etc) that the human mind actually needs? We’re conducting this experiment live. For the first time in history developing brains are being fed choppy low-grade and cheaply-produced synthetic data created en masse by generative AI, instead of being fed with real human culture. No one knows the effects, and no one appears to care. Especially not the companies, because…”

One problem, I think, with value for value on Nostr is that the currency is increasing in value so people will be incentivized to hold on to sats.

I designed and have taught a math elective called Critical Thinking for the last four years that wasn't going to run this year because not enough kids signed up. BUT, I got word on Friday that there is space in the schedule and if I can recruit enough kids (and it fits in their schedule) then it'll run in the spring! I'm cautiously excited - but there's work to be done - so I have to log off for a bit and focus. Have a great start to your week! #education #teaching Side note: My friend Will Reusch and I built a critical thinking curriculum that free to anyone who wants it. It using elements from the class I designed and would be useful for teachers but especially homeschoolers or homeschool teachers. I know there are quite a few homeschoolers and world schoolers around here. #homeschooling #worldschooling https://www.williamreusch.com/criticalthinking
