Dad. Husband. Math teacher. Runner. Amateur writer. Fisherman. Mediocre guitar player and volleyball player. We need a new cultural enlightenment. I want to be a part of it.

I want to be able to post to nostr and have it automatically post to Twitter. Is that a thing yet? #asknostr

I love the idea of shadowing a student for a day to get their perspective.

My nostr friends are an eclectic bunch with wide ranging viewpoints and while I’m sure I disagree with most of them on various stuff I think they’ve all got good hearts and they haven’t given up on the future. Not a nihilist to be found. A lot of hope and working towards a better future. I hope other communities will come to nostr but even if they don’t it’s still a great community. #grownostr #plebchain

@primal You have got to figure out the autocorrect issue on iOS. I won’t even share the iOS version of primal with anyone until it’s fixed. It’s a basic function of any social media client and it makes posting more than a few words an absolute headache. Please prioritize this. 🙏🏼 #asknostr

Jon Haidt is working to save our from becoming another data point in the anxious generation. “I’m writing to explain why we have put up only one post in the past month and to offer a powerful idea that is relevant to all efforts to reform social media. First the explanation: The Anxious Generation comes out in 5 weeks, on March 26, and there is so much we have to do! Zach and I turned in the final revisions of the book in December and we have been busy since then working with web designers to create a website, raising money to support a guerilla art campaign by the artist who designed the cover of the book (more on that soon), organizing friends and allies, getting me set up on Instagram and TikTok (fight fire with fire), doing interviews that will be released after launch, and otherwise gearing up for a campaign to end the phone-based childhood and reinvent the play-based childhood for the 21st century. In other words, we are getting ready to launch a movement to Free The Anxious Generation.”

Public schools are frequently punching bags. And I get it. I’m a public school teacher and on many things I will punch right there with you. But I will say that a major problem we have in education is the teacher prep programs. So much of it is useless to future teachers and it forces teachers to bootstrap their own pedagogy and best practices after they’ve graduated. And paid a lot of money for those useless classes. And possibly spent more semesters at college completing the programs. It’s expensive and the ROI is very often just not there. Of course it’s not all bad. But there are many assignments that are essentially busy work. 10 to 15 page lesson plans. Not enough time in classrooms working with *expert* teachers. Not enough time analyzing teaching videos and case studies. Not enough time considering the *practices* of teaching well. Not enough training in cognitive science and what it has to say about teaching and learning. Far too much constructivist philosophy, which is directly related to the lack of focus on cognitive science. And then you throw in super-left activist professors and sometimes whole departments whole departments. Future teachers are starting in the hole and have to dig themselves out while maintaining a more than full-time job that’s exhausting. Now, this is not ALL education departments at EVERY university. I’m speaking in averages. I’m going speak at a university that, as far as I can tell, has a pretty solid department, at least when it comes to math teaching. Every experienced and good teacher needs to do their part in helping young teachers and future teachers get the skill set and mindset they need for long term success. I doubt there are professors reading this, but if so, get your students in classrooms and connected with teachers a much as possible. Help them learn and use the skills of teaching well. If you wanted to teach someone to be a great woodworker you wouldn’t make your primary approach textbooks and obnoxiously long papers. At the end of the day a great paper on woodworking doesn’t mean jack if you can’t build the thing. And it’s the same with teaching. #teaching #education #grownostr

We need experts and we need institutions. And most importantly we need them to not be corrupted.

I mostly agree with this and I’m not one to tear down and optimistic outlook. We need hope or why are we even getting up in the morning. But, my biggest concern is that systemic fragility is increasing and we just keep spinning the roulette wheel. I don’t know how times we can do that. View quoted note →

A student asked a great question earlier today when we were talking about the connection between position, velocity, and acceleration in calculus. She asked, “if the integral of acceleration is velocity, and the integral of velocity is position, then what’s the integral of position?” We had a great conversation about it after I did some thinking and research. Here’s an in depth explanation for anyone interested. #teaching #math

Just to be clear, I love teaching math. I get to be around math most days and I love sharing math with my students. I love working with young people and watching them grow. A few of you mentioned that if I love doing math then I should pursue it - and maybe I should! But if it went full throttle into all the stuff I’m passionate about I’d need about a half dozen lifetimes. 😂 I’d spend one getting amazing at guitar. I’d spend one doing math. One teaching math. One backpacking all over the world. And maybe one studying philosophy. Heck, maybe one just bass fishing. #grownostr View quoted note →

Man, I love doing math. I’m making solution guides to every calculus assignment this year and it’s reminding me of how much I love it. I sometimes wish I had pursued it beyond my bachelors, but I’m not sure if I had the mathematical chops to cut it. Probably could’ve made through a masters program. But I doubt much beyond that. I actually looked into it a few years after I started teaching but there was no way to make it work while also maintaining a full time job. #math #grownostr #teaching
