Dad. Husband. Math teacher. Runner. Amateur writer. Fisherman. Mediocre guitar player and volleyball player. We need a new cultural enlightenment. I want to be a part of it.

I have to peel my kids out of bed on school days around 7:15. Today they’re both up by 7:00. WTF

I disagree. There simply are “lone geniuses” and for the most part we should get out of their way instead of forcing them to mold to some vision we have of collaboration or teamwork. Take a look at Jacob Collier as a modern example. View quoted note →

For anything you deeply care about – seek to disconfirm your priors. Those that you repeatedly fail to disconfirm are most likely to approximate truth.

Dr. John Campbell is a godsend for those looking for truth and clarity from a sane person.

Suffering is inescapable. It’s intrinsic to be human. We don’t do our children any favors by pretending otherwise. We don’t do ourselves any favors by pretending otherwise. I’m not saying that we go out of our way to show them suffering or make them suffer. But when it knocks on the door, we shouldn’t always be protecting them from it. Love long enough and you will suffer. Life is about figuring out how to handle the suffering wisely and nobly. And meaning is found in working to transcend and ameliorate that suffering. If you really internalize this then you will reject victimhood. When terrible things happen you won’t fall into “wow is me.” You’ll be as prepared as possible and will view it as a necessary part of life. (The hard thing, for me at least, is internalizing this. It takes constant work.) #grownostr #plebchain

I’m finally feeling better after a savage bout of strep. Three days of misery. I took two days in a row off from school. The only other time I did that because I was sick was when I had Covid - and that was only because I was mandated to quarantine. The worst part about missing school, aside from having to write sub plans when you feel like crap, is that when you start to feel better you have to tackle the avalanche of work that built up while you were gone. Wish me luck this weekend. 😅

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson was a national treasure. Absolutely hilarious.

You should have heard me later on in the evening when she was reading a book called “weird but true: 300 outrageous facts” and she said “dad, did you know that if you traveled the speed of light you wouldn’t age.” “Yes I did” “Why wouldn’t you age?” “…….do you know what a dimension is?” “No” “…….okay, so imagine a worm on a wire…” #memes #physics image

Good morning everyone. With school starting up I’ve had a lot less time to hang out here. But I’m still here. I’m about to head out for a quick run. Hope everyone is doing well and has a great day! #coffeechain #runstr #running image

Aren’t we past the point where Apple needs to hold a massive “event” just to tell us that their chips are little faster, their cameras are a little better, and that change the charging port?

Some of you homeschoolers or unschoolers might be interested in this. Or if you just have kids in the age range from 8 to 12. #homeschooling #unschooling #grownostr “Announcing: "Young Wanderers," a subscription box reading program for curious children. The great thinkers of the past thought that reading good books, those that transcend space and time, was a crucial element of a good education. I agree. And reading classic literature is a key ingredient of a liberal arts education, an education focused on developing the mind. If you think about education like a puzzle, with different elements, like reading philosophy and fictional literature, writing stories and persuasive essays, manipulating objects and machines in the name of exploration, and so forth, Young Wanderers is one piece of the education puzzle. The purpose being to go on an adventure via imaginative literature, become integrated in a different reality, the one the writer has created, and relish in the power of storytelling to ignite the imagination in a way that is familiar to the reader. Young Wanderers read classic imaginative literature, such as The Jungle Book, The Secret Garden, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Black Beauty to have such experiences. Children ages 7 to 12 who sign up to become a Young Wanderer receive a classic text nearly once a month, along with other goodies like writing materials and milestone gifts. And parents, or the caregiver who signs up the child, are granted access to an online community of other caregivers who value classic literature and a liberal arts education.”
