Should I record a quick overview of this Pokémon card manager I’ve been slowly building? It’s been a long, meandering project at this point, and I’m probably the only one who’ll ever actually use it, but it might be fun to show what it’s turned into and hear what you think.

I think my Pokémon card manager is at an mvp point and can finally be put to use

I keep seeing a lot of anti-AI and anti-crypto arguments that hinge on the idea that water is being “used up.” Data centers get described as if they’re consuming water the way a fire consumes wood, like it’s being permanently removed from the world. Maybe I’m missing something, but that framing feels strange to me. In most cases the water is being used for cooling, it absorbs heat, some of it evaporates, and it goes back into the broader water cycle. It isn’t disappearing. It’s changing state and location for a while. That’s not what people seem to be reacting to. What I don’t understand is why “water use” gets talked about as if it means water is being destroyed or permanently removed from the system. Cooling water changes temperature, sometimes changes phase, moves around, then re-enters the same cycle it’s always been in. So why is this the thing that my kids ask about? 🙃

It’s weird how satisfying it is to have a project you know will make your life better and because it’s modular it already is in some ways.

I’ve begun reading Artemis Fowl to my children. I enjoyed reading it when I was a kid, and thankfully, they seem to enjoy it as well.

I usually get excited to watch Michael Saylor’s conversations, and I even started watching the one everyone’s talking about. However, I got distracted in the middle and then saw people posting about it. Now, I don’t want to keep watching.

Adding inventory management to my card management system

It’s been a long time since I last sourced cards to sell, and I’m trying to recalibrate a bit. If I assume a worst-case scenario, say I buy 100 cards and can only sell them for $1.25 each, how high should I let my cost per card go before it stops being worth adding to inventory? At what point am I just trading time for nothing, or even losing money, $0.30? $0.40? My gut says around $0.30 per card shipped feels safe. Between the mailers, thick envelopes, card savers, and penny sleeves, I’m probably at $0.10–$0.15 in materials per card. Shipping is paid by the buyer, so that would leave something like $0.50–$0.75 per card before fees and time. I should probably sit down and do the exact math, but I’m curious how other people think about this.

When did the ostrich become the de facto mascot of NOSTR?

Placed a couple bids on card lots. I don’t know if any of them will work out, but I need to start thinking about replenishing inventory.

Yes, the world can be a pretty shitty place if you get down into the weeds, but it’s also the best world we’ve had in the history of humanity. Too few people focus on how good things are, statistically speaking. I try not to live inside social media. I pay more attention to what’s happening locally, and if things are good here, then I feel good. That’s most of what actually matters. If things are bad where you are, do something about it. If they’re not, then do whatever you want, be happy, and grow from there. You’re not on the bottom rung of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Hey, thanks for being here. If you’re following because you like the yo-yo tricks I post and want to see more of that, I’m genuinely glad you’re around. If you’ve ever thought you might want to learn someday, even better: I’ve got tutorials and I enjoy teaching. You’ll also see me talk about other things I’m curious about: AI, technology, sci-fi and fantasy, random science projects, being a dad, Bitcoin; whatever happens to have my attention at the moment. That mix isn’t going to narrow over time; it’s just how I use this space. One thing I really value here is that being here is a choice. There’s no algorithm dragging anyone along. If this kind of feed feels right to you, thank you. I appreciate the company. And if it doesn’t, no hard feelings at all.

I’m trying to see how much of the process between finishing photos and selling a card on eBay I can automate. I know it’s possible to automatically flatten, crop, identify, batch, upload, list, and then wait for the sale. So far, I can identify card corners, flatten the images, and crop them. Right now I’m bringing the identification scripts that I know work into the main pipeline so that step happens automatically. Next, I need to work on batching groups of cards into a file that can be uploaded to eBay. I want the whole flow to be as automatic as possible, so there’s still some fine-tuning left to do.
