We already have an adult #macadamia tree at the farm germinated from seeds with origin in Costa Rica. Germinating new seeds from it has been a difficult task for now, since it takes a lot of time for the seeds to sprout thru the hard husk. We keep trying though. We also plan to air layer a few branches so to clone it. That initial tree is a hybrid which bears a decent amount of nuts. To add an additional genetic variety we ordered a "Beaumont" cultivar online which should start bearing fruits/nuts in a couple of years since it is a grafted tree. Also, it has a characteristic abundant reddish blossoms that look very pretty and bees love them. We received that tree this week from Florida, USA. Its appearance show that it wasn't very comfortable or properly fertilized at the origin nursery. You can notice chlorotic leaves which may indicate lack of nitrogen. Regardless, we planted it today and will update on its status for you to witness its recovery. We dug a decent hole , applied our duck deep bed compost, azomite and some soil from the shallow roots of the first tree. This, with the intention of promoting inoculation with the appropriate arbuscular mycorrhiza spores. Stay tuned! #farmstr #foodstr #grownostr #agroforestry

Replanting some #criollo #cacao trees. We temporarily enclose them in shade cloth until the companion shade trees (usually Ingas) catch up with them. It not only protect them from the Sun, but also from the wind. #farmstr #craftchocolate #agroforestry #foodstr image

GM! 🌞 Today we continue the drying process on our latest micro fermentation of #cacao. Luckily, the first day out of the fermentation box it was a clear and sunny day where we had the chance of removing most of the initial humidity in a controlled way. The following days were mostly cloudy and rainy. We use the polycarbonate cover of the dryer box to prevent rain and take advantage of any sun ray we may get when not tending to it. Nothing beats direct sun rays. image

We avoid as much as we can letting #soil exposed to the environment. So until we are ready to plant, the area is kept as is, wild, weedy. No β€œlandscaping” over here. In this picture you can find, #macambo trees, #durian trees, #avocado trees, #cacao trees, #inga trees among other companion crops. All being fertilized with chop and drop methods and the duck β€œwaste” water and #deepbedding #compost. image
