OK. So group posts end up in the global feed. That is interesting. I guess we need some more filters or something within clients.

Better Soil, Better Food, Better Health
Hey everyone!
I am Micah. I own Bright Future Farms. I have listened to tsp off and on for more than a decade now.
I did not even know what a podcast was when I started listening! I had no clue you could download them and listen offline!
So this is a group through nostr, right? I justupdatedd amythist and this was here. I am behind on the podcasts again.
There is no food tax in TN for three months. I just picked up enough organic tomato sauces to last us 6 months. I would have gotten twice as many if the store had that much. I guess I will have to go back.
This will do a until I can pay someone to grow a tenth of an acre in paste tomatos.

I just got called out because I suck.
That is because I do suck.
I had been complaining that I could not upload pictures with my bad internet connection. That has been resolved, but I have not posted any pictures.
I told you I suck.
It is too dark to take pictures, so I will post some older ones.
#permies #pigs #chickens #grownostr

This batch of Australorp #chickens is putting themselves to bed reliably. Now I just have to move them into the coop with the old flock. This should not be too hard. I may just leave them in the pen around the coop for the first day.
With them moved, I will finally be able to raise a flock of breese chickens. I just had too many poultry projects up to this point.
If you want to produce nutritious food on your land, chickens are about the easiest way to make that happen. A good dog is the best way to keep them from being killed by predators. So how dou you feed the dog? ( #dogstr )
Ultimately, my plan is to have enough poultry and rabbits to take care of the bulk of what the dogs need. They also do very well on the guts of larger animals like pigs, sheep, and deer. I am still feeding kibble right now, but the price is getting to the point that the additional infrestucture to do all of this is starting to look more reasonable.
I will not have rabbits until my willows are producing enough fodder to provide the bulk of their diet. Chickens can be free ranged to a point, but it is possible to have more than is healthy for the land. If I raise them in pens for hatching eggs/chicks/poults, I will still have roosters. Since we really would only eat about one chicken per week, every rooster past number 52 is potential dog food.
#permies don't like to raise birds in pens, but some comprises are worth considering for a time while developing better systems. Normies can break the bank selling eggs for less than the cost of feed. #permaculture requires that one attains a yield. In this case the yield is money, replacement birds, #realfood, dog food, fertilizer, and the useful traits of chicken behavior.
So does it make sense for me to raise more birds? Yes.
Am I going to order 200 birds tomorow? Maybe, but the shipping date would be closer to September or October.
Always remember to stack things in appropriate ways across time. Too much too soon leads to too many problems. That is no excuse to do nothing. It is the time to lay the necessary groundwork.
Grow chickens! #grownostr !
And I misspelled another word on nostr.
Oh well. Proof of immutability.
I spoke with another local producer yesterday. He bought a group of stocker #cattle to finish on grass. He has had to make some comprises to keep the stockers he has on site. They are of different breeds and they just don't have the genetics to earn their keep on his land in it's current state.
We mostly talked about solutions. We talked about securing a better source of hay, the water holding and life conducive properties of #biochar in pasture soil, placement of cross fencing, and much more. Most importantly, we talked about the kind of #cows that will do well on a #grassfed operation.
I made the same mistake when I got my first group of #pigs. I had heard that "a #pig is a pig, just raise them right". While well intentioned and based on much personal experience, modern commercial pigs have tough lean meat without much flavor.
It is very important for us to help the new #farmer source good stock. Those first few years will make or break a person. Bad stock hurt me financially, and gave people an impression about my product that is hard to recover from. #realfood should be a better eating experience.
So what breed should you acquire? It depends, but I would strongly encourage you to look at the type rather than the breed.
There are great older type Aberdeen Angus lines, and big black "Angus"ย cows that will die on pasture. There are heritage Yorkshire pigs, and modern commercial Yorkshires.
If you want to raise them the right way, consider these traits. For pigs, big floppy ears and a good layer of fat over its shoulders. For cows, smaller cows with big round guts. For #sheep and #goats, parasite resistance.
Look at what successful people around you are doing, but know that your land will be different. Learn your land and cull hard. Most importantly, never stop learning.
Let's grow farms. Let's grow farmers. Let's #grownostr.
Pig feed is expensive. #soyfree and #nonGMO is now well over $20/bag.
How can we raise healthy #pigs and feed our families healthy #pork ?
I am now feeding 4 pigs on less than one bag of grain per week. They are maintaining good condition on a diet that mostly consists of #fodder from trees. Elm and hazel make up the bulk of their diet right now. They also get birch, willow, beech, sweetgum, grasses, and other things.
I am thinking they will be able to raise some #piglets on this with just a few supplements. I will probably give them some kelp, but a couple of eggs and a bit of milk each week is probably enough. I will try to keep people updated on this.
I hope this helps someone.
I am confident that #permies can develop #regenerativeAG practices that will allow people in temperate climates to raise a closed herd of pigs on a moderate amount of land without significant outside inputs. It just takes a bit of #permaculture ingenuity. Winter will be the difficult hurdle here on my #farm. I think #silage from #foddertrees will be an important piece of the puzzle.
Let's grow #realfood at an affordable price! Let's #grownostr !
My #ruralinternet is now actually fast enough to help #grownostr!
I will be posting a lot more on here now. Before I do, however, I must first catch up on all the things that puts dollars into the bank.
This new internet connection will help me do that stuff in record timing! $60/month will save me several hours/week. More time to be with family, grow food, and build the life I want.

I am hearing that Musk is limiting non paying twitter users to viewing 300-600 post per day. This is a great opportunity to #grownostr !
I am listening to the beautiful thunder. I hear the first raindrops on the roof. The sweet potatos need it more than anything. The everberring strawberries will put on some new flowers. The pigs will be satisfied with their break from these long hot days.
So many people go on about how they hate rainy days. Fine! Move to the worst deserts of the world! Then you will learn to love the rain. The Lord is good, and he causes it to rain on the just and the unjust.

I don't think this is going to make any meaningful difference on a government level. I am just hoping this will start clicking for some other people who hear it.
We must be doing something right on this property. We now have a green heron. Presumably one of a breeding pair with a nest nearby.

You can learn how to do lot of things from watching youtube videos. Unfortunately much of it is idiots who think they actually know how to do the given task.
I made some fresh #cheese as an ingredient for supper tonight.๐ I have an old #madeintheusa stainless steel steamer that works great for draining the whey off.
