There were dead #fish in this creek yesterday. Now I know why. There was #herbicide for monocots sprayed across the road on one side of the creek, and herbicide for dicots sprayed across the road on the other side of the creek. We are ok. The new ponds now provide plenty of water for all the animals. The downside is that the dogs are eating the possums and raccoons that are drawn in to eat the dead fish. I guess I will be mixing #biochar into their food. I have been trying to upload a picture, but cannot with this slow #ruralinternet. #grownostr #poison #toxins #smallfarmproblems

I am attempting to drain an above ground pool through a homemade biochar filter. The owner had noticed that he had a sensitivity to something in the sunscreens that people were wearing in his pool. He was not even aware the so-called forever chemicals in them. I suspect he was reacting to the nano particles of zinc and titanium, but the other ingredients are the bigger environmental concern. I cannot prove that this will be effective. It is the best I could come up with considering the timeline I have. We are running a submersible pump at a trickle through the hose which is weighed down with a rock at the bottom of the drum. The water is slowly rising through the biochar and will come out a hole about halfway up the drum. This is the part I have a little more time to figure out. The water will flow into a pond that spills into a swamp. I will be taking steps to further clean up the water and soil in the pond. This will include the use of more biochar and biological mitigation/restoration measures. I will try to open up the canopy to get sunlight on the spillway, build up the height of the spillway, and try to get some kind of grasses and/or sedges to grow in it. The pool will receive a new liner and be filled with city water. The owner has chosen a saltwater system that will present some design challenges that a magnesium might not. Once a big rain hits, the pool will overflow into the pond again. I finally have about 25 gallons of biochar made. The tilted barrel method works well for about five gallons of good quality biochar. It is possible to get double that, but you lose the flame cap and start producing a lot of ash. You can see this in the photo. This method is fine for someone using fallen limbs on just an acre or two. It might also work in conjunction with a fodder coppice as long as you have multiple drums going. I will keep playing around with this, but will have to move to something much bigger as we clear out the sweetgum to plant fodder trees. (Sorry for the double post.
