In Australia we are less than 100 days away from having our biometrics harvested by social media platforms as a part of the reform's to block social media usage for under 16s. Whilst I absolutely see the merit in limiting social media usage for children to avoid all kinds of harms I'm most concerned about how the platforms will implement this and have no faith they are doing it with the users best intentions. If anything I think it will be used to train their algorithms, build out their networks and harvest even more of your data and user statistics to further their main interest, which from what I can see is growth and profits. It's utterly horrifying really. #privacy #socialmedia

Surveillance capitalism profiles your data and habits turning you into the product for unseen buyers who trade in human habits and browsing history as a commodity. It seems to be most prevalent on websites that people commonly interact with like news outlets, banks and social media which are crawling with trackers and pervasive advertising. The truth is anyone can become a victim of a scam. Scammers spend vast amount of time and resources trying to manipulate and exploit you to click their links or engage with their malicious emails. Don't be so hard on yourself, we are saturated with these attempts to rip us off. It's not until you start using privacy focused tools that highlight trackers blocked and advertisers that you really get a feel for how pervasive some of these websites are and how much they silently profile you on the way through their domain. In 2025 and beyond it really is irresponsible to have a business that isn't thinking about data protection. Data protection doesn't just mean data in transit (i.e email) it also means data at rest. If it isn't encrypted in it's resting state, that is when it isn't being used then you're asking for trouble. Think of your privacy as like your house. Nice and secure. Shut your curtains or lock your doors and nobody can see in. Now imagine OSINT is someone walking through your neighborhood what can they see about your house? The number on your letterbox maybe (your username or email), a car leaving the driveway at a certain time everyday perhaps (posting your routine). Maybe they can hear your conversations (public posts), detect your WiFi network (digital footprints) or even see your package left at the front door (data leaks and breaches). They haven't entered your house, they haven't broke in or stolen anything. They're only looking at publicly available information but they have a really good idea about you and your life. I sometimes wonder where OSINT sits in regards to online privacy. It seems counterintuitive that someone who loves osint and advocates for online privacy at the same time can write about, promote and enjoy both themes. Osint can uncover information about people privacy and the world where online privacy seeks to reduce that footprint. I reconcile my passion for osint as a tool for good to show people how publicly available images, posts and data can affect their privacy. When you learn osint you learn your vulnerability online. Privacy isn't easy. It's intentional and pretty inconvenient if I'm honest. It sometimes mean you'll have to turn your back on what is convenient and what's cool instead opting for a more secure channel. If you're serious about privacy you'll miss out on doing things that some others take for granted. Refusing to be in photos that blindly get uploaded to social media will frustrate and inconvenience others Focusing and valuing privacy though forces people to reflect on their own behaviors and limit your exposure online. Have you had your phone number for a long time? Chances are it's linked to your banking, social media or even your crypto exchange. If someone took control of your phone number that'd be catastrophic. It can happen it's called sim swapping and it's the act of porting your phone number out from under your nose onto another service provider. If it's done correctly it can leave all your banking, social media and personal sms verification codes exposed to hackers while you scramble to regain control of your accounts. Avoid using 2FA sent via SMS, use a software token at a minimum. Speak to your phone service provider and lock down your number so it can't be ported without a pin code or similar. It's worth doing. #SimSwapping
