You might hit a paywall so I'll sum it up and quote the key part. The premise of the article is around the formation and success of labour unions in the USA during and after WWII. The war pushed everyone to massively grow production and industrial output. Global competition was decimated by the war, giving the USA an opening to dominate, and they did, for awhile. But the unionization added a heavy cost to American businesses that Asian ones did not have. Capital that may have been invested in research and new technology instead went to pensions and benefits. When Europe got back on its feat, and OPEC asserted its dominance, the economy suffered through the 60's and 70's until the rug pull of the gold standard.

It's an interesting concept, but those little gates aren't going to stop a motivated thief. It's going to inconvenience legitimate customers who forgot their wallet in the car or have to leave for another reason. It would probably deter homeless people from going inside to eat the samples and use the toilets. They are probably the intended targets.

I was thinking about the sustainability of NOSTR relays recently, and your idea presents a viable solution. Relay operators could join federations, who collectively share a mint, such that the eCash tokens could be used for any federated member relay. One wants to have a list of relays, for better reliability, so an arrangement like that would be better for users. It also spreads out the trust among several parties -- one relay might disappear, your investment with it -- but less likely for all members of a federation to vanish. IMO the eCash tokens should be redeemable from the mint for bitcoin, in case you decide to move on. So it operates like a prepaid VISA card, for use with member relays. Sophisticated client software could automatically handle eCash top-ops from the configured mint, for better UX. A standard could be developed for mint service with member NOSTR relays, to facilitate communication with NOSTR client software.

The AI industry's claims about AI coding assistants boosting productivity significantly appear to be massively overblown, per a new report.

AI can easily waste more time than it saves. Developers must be hyper vigilant with their time when using AI, as it can easily take one down an irrelevant rabbit hole, or generate useless/broken code that takes longer to fix than it would have to just write it in the first place. It is a tool that must be learned, which takes time and effort. Many teams are still figuring out how to productively implement the technology into their processes.

I’ve been mountain biking on Vancouver Island for the past week. The popular trails in Cumberland are more developed, but much of it is exposed to the sun, especially through the clearcut areas, and its quite dusty. North of Campbell River, in the Snowden Demonstration Forest, you get very lush forests and soft, earthy trails under the canopy.

Mountain biking is a great way to meet women. Mostly nurses.
