Wearable Touchscreens A glimpse into the future. You now need to pay for T-Shirt pro to remove ads from your clothes. Some really cool, (but kind of scary) technology came out of the National University of Singapore recently. We now have touchscreen textiles. Quoting the important bit of the abstract: We integrate these fibres into the forearm portion of a garment sleeve to realize a GUI with a 96 × 54-pixel display, 30-frame-per-second refresh rate and 8-bit colour depth. It supports dynamic graphics, integrated audio–video playback, wireless data exchange and interactive computing functions, while maintaining the flexibility, washability, breathability and mechanical robustness of everyday textiles While the tech is undeniably pretty cool, I do have to stop and ask if the problems of modern life can really be solved by more touchscreens. That said, I am sure we will see some really cool art, fashion and such from the technology. And I am sure someone out there will find a cool application for it. I look forward to the day I can let the niece and nephew play whack-a-mole on my belly through a T-shirt like this. Personally, I am more excited about wearable sensore, like this project from University Of Sydney (Not Paywalled) where they measure breathing rate and step cadence with a polyurethane fiber taped to their chest. It seems like there is a lot of progress on health tracking, but not as much progress on motivating me to actually go to the gym. Maybe that is where these scientists should look next.
