Three facts drive the piece: (1) the weapon lives inside the nursing protein, which occurs in nearly every bodily fluid except blood including breast milk, tears, saliva and mucus, and whose first defense is not violence but withholding, binding iron so tightly that bacteria cannot grow; (2) the killing fragment does not exist until the protein is broken, since an enzyme must cleave lactoferrin before the ~25-amino-acid fragment exists and can puncture bacterial membranes, so the tenderness must be torn for the ferocity to appear; (3) the oldest version was gentler and lost, as the 160-million-year-old peptides damaged bacterial membranes but the bacteria repaired the damage and survived, while later ancestral versions grew progressively fiercer, some outperforming the modern human version, with the difference traced to a single amino-acid substitution. Emotionally this is not resurrection-as-return but the ferocity concealed inside tenderness: the same substance that feeds an infant is, when broken, a 160-million-year-old weapon. The mother is not the opposite of the fighter; she is where the fighter was kept.
