The History of the Pharmaceutical Industry… It all began with John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937), who entered history as an oil tycoon and America’s first billionaire. At the turn of the 20th century, Rockefeller controlled 90% of all U.S. oil refineries through his company, Standard Oil—later broken up into giants like Chevron, Exxon Mobil, and others. Around the same time (circa 1900), scientists discovered “petrochemicals” chemical compounds derived from oil. For instance, the first plastic, known as Bakelite, was created from oil in 1907. Scientists also began identifying vitamins and realized that countless pharmaceutical products could be derived from oil. This presented a fantastic opportunity for Rockefeller, who saw a way to dominate not just the oil industry but also the chemical and medical industries. The brilliance of petrochemical products lay in their patentability, they could be mass-produced and sold at enormous profit margins. However, there was a problem: at the time, natural medicine was highly popular in America. Doctors and healers practiced holistic medicine, drawing on European traditions and Native American knowledge. To eliminate this competition, a strategy was devised. The Flexner Report: The Turning Point Rockefeller enlisted Abraham Flexner through the Carnegie Foundation to evaluate medical schools and hospitals across the U.S. This led to the Flexner Report, which conveniently recommended centralizing and overhauling healthcare institutions. The catch? Money 💰💰💰a lot of it. And what was the condition for receiving this funding? The abandonment of traditional, natural healing methods. • Homeopathy and natural medicine were ridiculed and demonized. • Medical schools were quickly standardized, with all students taught the same curriculum focused on patented drugs. To ensure compliance, Rockefeller donated over $100 million (an astronomical sum at the time) to schools and hospitals, while opposing doctors were silenced, either through imprisonment or professional sabotage. The Legacy of Modern Medicine From this point on, modern medicine revolved around patented, oil-based pharmaceuticals. Scientists received generous grants to study plants, not to use them as cures, but to identify active ingredients that could be synthetically replicated and patented. The mantra of modern medicine became clear: prescribe pills made from petrochemical compounds.
