Started the week with a scrap yard run. Just a load of junk I picked up around the farm and out of some old barns, but it was $116 dollars worth of metal. While I was driving through the scrap yard, I saw a Ford truck they were starting to break down, and it happened to have mirrors compatible with my truck. I've been driving around with a busted mirror for the last year, so for $50 I got a replacement driver side mirror assembly. Came home the other day to find this in my kitchen floor. In the sub zero temperatures, this calf was born and the cow apparently abandoned it. The calf showed up in our neighbor's yard. He claimed it wasn't his, nor did it belong to our neighbor to the north. He said the tracks came from our farm, and called my wife. She went and got it, brought him home and laid him in front of the fireplace to warm up. I was unable to find any clue as to which cow had the calf, so we have a bottle calf in the barn now. Never stop learning new skills. Over the past few weeks, I've been teaching myself leather working. As a knife guy and outdoorsman, I have many blades that need sheaths and several pieces of random gear that could use custom pouches. It tends to be time consuming and expensive to seek out the perfectly sized pouch or have custom sheaths made. Hence the decision to make things myself. Spent 10 days off-grid on Hardscrabble Mountain in Colorado. There were four of us in our group. My brother filled his bear tag. Another guy had an elk tag, but we never could get within range of a legal buck. I went as the designated camp cook and bushcraft/survival specialist. On day 2, the mountain dumped 12 to 18 inches of snow on us and temperatures dropped to single digits.
