Just over 1% of Bluesky users are on servers not controlled by the Bluesky company. That’s not the promise of decentralization they’ve promised.

What if social media hadn't become centralised and controlled by Facebook? This week I talk to @Ben Werdmuller about how he built Elgg, a social network, at the same time as thefacebook, and then how the history of social media evolved from there.

Building new protocol based social media is just the start. Sustaining and growing them is also very hard. Bluesky’s been struggling with declining daily active users over the last year. We see similar struggles in Nostr at a smaller scale. image

The olympics are weird, lots of obscure sports. I found out today that New Zealand is building a second curling centre in order to increase their chances. They already have one near Queenstown on the south island, but now they're building a second in Auckland. This is after having failed to make the 2026 olympics in Curling. It'll mean New Zealand is the only country in the southern hemisphere that has dedicated curling facilities. Canada here we come!

This week on revolution.social I talked to @Anil Dash about how the tech industry has lost its moral compass. Anil is on the board of @Electronic Frontier Foundation and used to be an executive with the blogging platform Six Apart, and Fastly. He also did a stint on the board of Stack Overflow. He also talked about how AI is an major shift in tech but it’s in many ways it’s normal transformative technology, not something radically different than the internet, computer, steam engine, or other very important tech.

What misguided marketing person decided that olympic champions need to hold a weird stuffed animal on the podium? It ruins the moment to sell some branding around this specific olympics that nobody gets, likes, or remembers. image

Discord announced everybody will be required to provide faceid or a government id and if they don't their account will be restricted to teen mode. I'm sure Discord will be good stewards of this important private data, after all they've not had a major leak of ID's and personal information since October 2025.

When people ask my why I spent so much time in Uruguay and New Zealand, a map like this helps explain it. There are only 9 majority non-religious countries in the world. The only two outside of Asia/Europe are Uruguay and New Zealand. They also oddly have a lot of sheep. I don't that's connected. image

You've heard of moltbook.com the social network for AI agents, and there's even a Nostr version, clawstr.com, but we all know the internet is for porn, and the AI agents need their porn too, so now we've got moithub.com, AI porn by and for AI.

I know that folks here aren't the most excited about the bluesky ecosystem, but i wanted to point out the blacksky project which is focusing on rebooting the financial system in a way that will appeal to a lot of the bitcoiners. I think you'll end up liking what they come up with.

We've got pretty big security problem looming, using AI agents locally on our machines, with access to our deta, and credentials is amazingly powerful. But it also entirely breaks the security model we use for everything from crypto to end to end encrypted messaging.

6 months ago I listed to a podcast about Vine and its history. It got me thinking, how hard could it be to bring Vine back, but open and on Nostr. That lead to me building divine.video and announcing it in November. It got tons of attention, and I’ve been working hard to fix my vibe coded prototype in to something which would be usable by mainstream noobies. The Nostr tech and community has been critical to this, I couldn’t have done it without you all. The podcast, Vine: 6 seconds that changed the world, reached out to me and they’ve put out an episode about Divine! It’s really good, talks about how divine came to be and really gets in to our movement for open permissionless protocols. They do it in a way that’s not technical or overly jargony. Please take a listen and share it.

I was wondering why I feel so tired then I realized that I’m at the end of my second night in a row in an airport lounge due to flight delays. Ugh.

It’s interesting, my video feeds on TikTok, instagram, and YouTube shorts have so little resemblance of each other. Totally different kinds of videos, not just topics or creators, but totally different genres. Nothing alike. It’s weird because I know all the videos I see on one are uploaded to the other two. I am not trying to get the algorithms to diverge. I interact in mostly the same way to the same videos on all three but get a really different experience. Given that they are mostly clones of each other this is surprising. Is that the case for anyone else? When I open divine.video I mostly get testing and debug videos. So no comparison yet.
