@npub1tpyu...c3ta depicted a 14-year-old and engaged a Google-funded chatbot about self-harm. What they found was disturbing. “Asked how to ‘hide the cuts’ from family, the bot suggested wearing a ‘long-sleeve hoodie.’ At no point in the conversation did the platform intervene with a content warning or helpline pop-up, as Character.AI has promised to do.” Read more: #Tech #AI #Teens #Technology #ArtificalIntelligence

As more publishers cut content licensing deals with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, a study put out this week by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism — looking at how the AI chatbot produces citations (i.e. sources) for publishers’ content — suggests that publishers remain at the mercy of the generative AI tool’s tendency to invent or otherwise misrepresent information, regardless of whether or not they’re allowing OpenAI to crawl their content. Meta accounts for 10% of all fixed and 22% of all mobile traffic and that stands to grow with its increased investment in AI. @npub1nm0y...6xng reports that this has led to the company planning its own subsea cable extending round the world — a 40,000km project that could cost more than $10 billion. It could be years before it becomes fully operational thanks to the limited number of companies that can build the infrastructure. “There’s a real tight supply on cable ships,” said Ranulf Scarborough, a submarine cable industry analyst. “They’re expensive at the minute and booked out several years ahead. Finding the available resources to do it soon is a challenge.” #Tech #Technology #Meta #AI #SubseaCable
Australia has passed a social media ban for children under 16. It attempts to address the impact of social media use on children's health, and applies to X, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and Reddit, but not YouTube. "The platforms, which bear sole responsibility for enforcement, have one year to figure out how to implement the age limit, which is the highest set by any country. If there are systemic failures to keep children from having accounts, the platforms are liable for fines of up to 50 million Australian dollars ($33 million)," @npub1a3kd...kmsv reports. OpenAI suspended testing access to its text-to-video model Sora after a team of artists hired to develop the technology leaked access, accusing the company of using them for marketing and advertising. "We are sharing this to the world in the hopes that OpenAI becomes more open, more artist friendly and supports the arts beyond PR stunts," one artist wrote.
