when you have a default reference implementation of Bitcoin
is actually blanket vote for Core to do whatever they want.
Having just one reference implementation of Bitcoin is a weak link that has worked up until now because trust was upheld.
When the social contract (not respecting the Bitcoin community's wishes) is broken this is no longer the case.
