Work in progress: Mast Year Fawns double-lidded vessel （炖盅）in red clay. These are the kind of vessels I keep sourdough starter in, as the two lids keep out the flies drawn to the carbon dioxide where one alone does not. But in their culture of origin, they’re used to serve food. Inspired by the abundant acorns and beech nuts this year, the thick-walled piece is deeply carved all over with white oak, persimmon, red oak, and beech, all food for deer. The handles of the two lids are twin fawns. Inspired by a tattoo I heard about, the word “Grateful” is carved into the front of the mug — but each letter has one element missing, for example, the crossbar of the A. The point of this is to remind us to be grateful for what we have, even if it isn’t complete. There’s also a really cool spiral carved on the thumb rest and handle! Making a mystery glaze! Every time I’m done with a brush, and most of the time I have dried glaze chips fall off the lid when I open the jar, I’m washing it all into this tub of water. Next year (I started doing this right after the studio show), I’ll glaze some pots with it and see what it looks like! There’s a chance it could be boring-looking, but unlike mixing paints, there’s a lot of chemistry that goes on in making glazes that makes the color and look of it a little more unpredictable.
