I wonder how much wealth destruction happens over the years when a country collapses. People start leaving the country, but a lot of parents and grandparents stay. They are then supported by the population that leaves. These migrants then have way fewer savings to prosper in the future. I don't think this is accounted for in a lot of studies. I see friends of mine that have good jobs, but they have to send money home every month to help support their family; they end up losing half of their potential savings to this.
