Wisdom teeth are all out! Currently recuperating in the hospital room, so obviously, no videos for the end of the week, and we’ll see what I can do for next week :)

Now that I got my ass handed to me in a game of #Warhammer 40K, it's time for the #Linux and #OpenSource News video!
In this one, the OSI basically said that no big #AI model is currently Open Source, Torvalds said AI is 90% Marketing, we have the release of #Fedora 41 and the #Cosmic Alpha 3, and Apex Legends blocked Linux gamers:
I initially wanted to try and find various, even convoluted, ways of running the most used #Windows apps on #linux
Since none of them cooperated, no matter the technique, app, or version of Wine I tried, I decided instead to make a video highlighting how Wine definitely isn't a solution for anything other than games:
In this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video, we have:
- #Fedora 42 getting a proposal for telemetry (opt-in, fortunately)
- Deepin adding #AI features to their future release, and most of it is running locally
- #Google making changes to #ChromeOS, which might spell the end of ChromeOS Flex
And a lot more as well, including some good progress on x86 emulation on ARM:
To anyone wondering why videos aren’t on the Peertube channel anymore: apparently, it’s an issue with the yt-dlp library used to sync from YouTube to Peertube. The instance I use is affected, and plenty of other VPS users seem to have the same problem.
The gist of it is: Google reports the library as a bot, and thus the sync can’t be performed. So, for now, videos will be on YT only, until this can be circumvented.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Yesterday, I spent my entire afternoon visiting badly located, old, and expensive houses.
I not only lost half a day of work (way more than initially agreed upon), failed to publish my daily Patroncast, couldn’t work on a video script, but also did that for nothing, as every single house I saw was absolute overpriced garbage.
A day well spent!
It always kinda scares me when I read certain comments. They’re not numerous, but I see more of them each year. They say things like « the woke EU », or the « EUssr », or « socialist EU ».
They’re generally there when I talk about the EU regulating big tech, or fighting abuses of dominant position, and I just don’t understand how anyone can link that kind of activity to being « woke » whatever that means today, or being « socialist » (which in these people’s minds probably means « commie »).
« Tucker Carlson joins Rumble » they tell me in an email that openly displays a lack of neutrality on virtually every topic they want me to watch on their platform, criticizing taxes, Joe Biden, « slacktivists » and liberals in 2 « recommended » videos.
So, hmmm, yeah, this makes me want to join your crap even less, Rumble. Do I want my little basic Linux videos side by side with conspiracy theorists that lied for years on TV? No, thank you.
I decided to look at a few quick ways to improve the security of a #Linux system compared to the baseline most distros provide.
They generally have to strike a balance between usability and security, which means that, depending on your own use case, there are some steps you might want to take to increase how secure your own install is. So, here are a few quick tips I find useful for my own servers and desktops:
If you’re looking for #OpenSource app recommendations, you probably generally land in the usual « LibreOffice / GIMP » space.
But what about other apps, like Obsidian, Notion, VS Code, Teams or Slack?
Well, I have a few recommendations for these as well, if you want to go all open source (and they all run on #Linux, of course):
I decided to play Starfield even though it looked like Fallout 4 in space (not a good thing, I didn’t enjoy Fallout 4).
And while it isn’t bad, I find myself wishing for the quests and universe of Starfield, with No Man’s Sky engine and freedom of movement.
Seriously Bethesda, change your engine. It’s bad. Really bad.
Since macOS was really not my cup of tea, I installed @npub1f5dn...mw9x on my M1 MacBook Pro.
While I was expecting it to be alpha quality and very buggy, I was surprised to find a pretty great level of support for the hardware!
So here are my impressions, in video form: everything that works, what doesn’t work yet, and how to get it up and running:

Related to my latest video: people pointed out that Visual Studio is a major IDE missing from Linux, but available on Windows and macOS. Well, macOS is losing it as well, Microsoft just announced they would discontinue it for Apple’s OS.
I guess they won’t bring it to Linux any time soon, then (especially since they would argue that you can use Linux using WSL, and run Visual Studio on Windows at the same time)…
A lot of developers reports they use #Linux as their main professional OS (only 47% in 2022 though), so let’s see why a Linux distribution is the best choice for most developers:
(Yes, not ALL developers, there are always exceptions)
Here we go! #Linux and #OpenSource news time! I’m playing Warhammer 40K currently, so you’ll have to watch it to know what it’s about!
@npub1qhpk...tkpv and I had a great talk about Plasma 6, what I’d like to see in it, some nice sneak peeks of stuff that’s being worked on, and more!
Go check it out, it’s on his channel:
