Imagine if there was a widely accepted civic duty to run your own email server. People learning postfix configuration in high school. ISPs permitting port 25 outbound tcp traffic. Spam would be a problem, but that's what spam assassin class in 9th grade was about. What wouldn't be a problem would be tech oligarchs owning most or all of society's communication systems.

Virmach (cloud vps host) lost a whole /17 today 🤯 ie. Their customers are facing a global outage across different continents. There are some failure modes you plan for, and then some like this that just slap you right up your face. Luckily all my important shit is self hosted at home and our relays are not on Virmach. But I lost my public peertube and some email servers for a bit lol 🎻 Oh and the standard recourse, if they can't recover their supernet, is to re-address everything. The good news is I switched to dnscontrol a few months ago so updating records will be pretty easy. But I've seen them do that before. Anyway, I feel for them as they're having a really bad day right now.

I’m not even one day into replacing Threema with FluffyChat and I’d already say self hosted matrix with FluffyChat is 10x more fun and useful compared to Threema just for DMing alone. A bit of work to stand it up, but so worth it. being able to chat from any of my devices is great.
