Happy Paxalia! With the military season starting in a month, this was traditionally a day to pray for peace. We don't have a military season anymore, but the holiday seems particularly relevant this year. #Rome #Paganism #peace #grownostr

1926 years ago today, Trajan officially became emperor. He was the second of the 5 good emperors, and widely considered the best emperor by pagan historians within the Empire until Theodosius outlawed paganism. His conquests brought the Empire to its greatest geographic size, and he stared his reign by pardoning political prisoners and restoring private property that had been confiscated by his predecessors. He was known for his military victories, dedication to the rule of law, and decreasing the tax burden on order to increase general economic prosperity. #Rome #history #grownostr

1983 years ago today, Claudius was proclaimed emperor. He was the fourth emperor, and he had not expected the position. Before becoming emporer, he was a historian. His great work on the history of the late republic was censured and destroyed by his predecessors, as it was considered too dangerous for publication. #Rome #history #grownostr

Been thinking about the 'epidemic of loneliness'. I think the conflict between the individual and the state has hollowed out everything in between. Communities and families serve as important checks against the power of the state, but also contain the freedom of individuals, so both sides have hollowed them out, and neither side has given them a robust defence. In the conflict between the state and the individual, the community was the first casualty, but the family is not far behind. Now when people see healthy communities, they get cultish vibes. Predatory cults are very dangerous, but people need healthy communities in order to flourish. I fear that people still soon start to get toxic vibes when they see a healthy family too, if they haven't already.
