Candida (60) doesn't have a formal job. She earns her living selling fruit, farming, doing housework and taking care of her tiny home. She has six children and hopes her youngest daughter will succeed in school (who dreams of becoming a nurse). Fifteen years ago, she had a kidney surgery and for 25 years, has been missing almost all of her teeth. Due to limited financial resources, never had access to dental rehabilitation. Doña Rosa (61) sometimes has seasonal work in a groceries store (sometimes don't). Twenty five years ago was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, during which time also lost most of her teeth. At the time she had the chance to get dentures, but they broke easily, leading to many problems with her oral health. Over time, she developed a palatal torus (a bony growth on the palate) that complicates treatment and makes rehabilitation a challenge. Lorenza "Niña Lencha" (70) hasn't had teeth for 32 years (since 1993). At first, she used dentures that never fit properly and broke. She has significant alveolar bone loss. In addition, she has to deal with severe chronic pain because suffers from rheumatoid arthritis. She takes painkillers and steroids daily for relief and uses a cane + her granddaughter's help to get around. Two years ago, she had surgery on her face due to skin cancer. Coralia (79) is a widow and loss two sons. She has no formal income but try to sell fruits, fried vegetable pastries or firewood. She lives in a public space in a tiny house. She had an abdominal surgery due to an accident and currently is affected for high blood pressure.⚡ Coralia didn't visit a dentist for 40 years. During dental checkup, we have found severe bone loss and a complete denture in poor condition, which made it difficult for her to eat. An update for Nostr about last month… We took a few days off from el Zonte & after visiting Miami conf, we're currently in Panajachel/Guatemala. Atitlan lake is beautiful, but our mission to provide free dental care & deliver confidence and dignity though oral rehabilitation with Bitcoin Smiles is first. On our way⚡ #bitcoin

Besides providing free dental care and rehabilitation to elderly people living in impoverished communities, in 2022 we started a preventive community program. We began working with 67 children between 6-8 years old from Centro Escolar El Zonte, getting free dental check ups, cleanings, resin pit & fissure sealants and emergencies (and will continue providing maintenance). Tomorrow we proudly add 30 more children from a mayan school at Panajachel lake (Guatemala),  kickstarting our Bitcoin Smiles preventive community program in our neighboring countries.
