hmm… Rousseau. 🤔 “Rousseau’s central image is that the arts and sciences do not necessarily break chains; they decorate them. He says they throw “garlands of flowers over the chains” and produce “the appearance of all the virtues.” In context, he means refined culture makes domination feel pleasant, civilized, sociable, tasteful, and respectable. People may become more polite without becoming more free or good. A big part of his argument is about social masking. Earlier, Rousseau says, rougher manners made character more visible. He is not necessarily saying earlier humans were morally perfect; the text explicitly says human nature was not fundamentally better. But he thinks refined society teaches people to hide themselves. In one sharp line: “One does not dare to appear as what one is.” So politeness becomes a veil: people flatter, posture, compete, and conceal their true motives.”

Thomas Massie flipping the script on a “journalist”, ending in Massie chasing the fleeing reporter saying, “i just want to give you an opportunity to answer the rumors about you loving gay porn!” is cathartically hilarious
