Arguments as Artifacts: Toward an Open Infrastructure for Cumulative Understanding
TLDR
Most argument is slowed down by shifting premises, forgotten context, emotional noise, and the need to re-explain the same points. This essay proposes treating developed positions as versioned, inspectable artifacts with explicit and adjustable weightings. When the relative value assigned to sources, theories, and evidence becomes visible (including across people and over time) many disputes stop being foggy and become diagnosable. Residual disagreements can then be treated as shared open problems rather than personal contests. The result is less repetitive exhaustion and more cumulative understanding, while the permanent limits of subjectivity remain.
Introduction
In Time in a Bottle I described technology as the progressive art of capturing moments and carrying them forward: packing lived experience, insight, and pattern into forms that can travel across space and successive presents. Each advance raises the fidelity of what can be preserved and expands the action space of the living moment. The residual human work of integration, judgment, and meaning does not disappear; what changes is the background condition under which that work occurs.
This essay examines one concrete domain in which that background condition can be improved: the coordination of understanding itself. Human debate has long been an ad-hoc, high-friction performance. It is lossy, status-laden, and exhausting. Once the technical substrate exists, we can begin treating arguments the way mature fields already treat formal models, as versioned, inspectable artifacts rather than ephemeral contests. The result is not the elimination of disagreement. It is the conversion of disagreement into something more cumulative, more legible, and less costly to the people engaged in it.
The Friction of Live Discourse
Most public and private argument is bottlenecked by factors that have little to do with the underlying questions. Participants shift premises mid-conversation. Emotional temperature rises and collapses the shared frame. Earlier concessions and critical pieces of information are forgotten. The same points are repeated across multiple exchanges because context does not travel. Time pressure forces premature closure. Motivated reasoning and status competition distort the signal. After enough repetitions the work becomes taxing simply because humans must re-explain what they have already refined.
These costs are not inevitable features of truth-seeking. They are features of a low-fidelity transmission protocol. When the same person has explained a position for the forty-seventh time, the limiting factor is rarely the quality of the underlying model. It is the cost of re-instantiating it under conditions of incomplete memory, emotional residue, and finite attention. An infrastructure that can hold the model stably, present it adaptively, and surface only the residual points of genuine divergence removes a large class of unnecessary friction.
Arguments as Versioned Objects
The first move is to treat a developed position as a versioned object rather than a live performance. A fixed or carefully version-controlled statement of claims, evidence, assumptions, and inference steps can be inspected by any participant or any agent. Sources are explicit. Inference steps are visible. Concessions and updates are recorded rather than lost.
Other AIs or human computer scientists can audit the object. The programming and the evidence trail remain transparent.
Because the object is stable, it can be presented in different registers without mutating its content. The same underlying model can speak at the receiver’s preferred level of technical detail, epistemic style, or emotional temperature. Preference adaptation becomes a presentation layer, not a content layer. The receiver can request repetition, clarification of a specific node, or a steelmanned opposing view without forcing the original holder of the position to re-engage under conditions of fatigue or rising affect.
This does not freeze thought. Version control allows deliberate updates. What it prevents is the unnoticed drift and selective memory that currently degrade most extended exchanges. The argument becomes something closer to a research artifact than a verbal duel.
Explicit Weighting Layers
Many apparent empirical disputes are actually disputes about relative valuation. Two people can examine the same body of evidence and reach different conclusions because they assign different weight to particular sources, schools of thought, individuals, theoretical frameworks, or classes of evidence. These weightings usually remain implicit. The conversation therefore stalls in fog.
Making the weightings explicit and adjustable converts fog into diagnosis. Participants can see immediately whether the disagreement is empirical, structural, or foundational. They can ask cleaner questions: “If we raise the weight on this body of literature and lower the weight on that institutional authority, does the conclusion change?”. Weightings can be conversation-specific rather than global. A fixed ranking of “highest authorities” would simply recreate institutional capture under a more technical form. Allowing declared, inspectable, adjustable weightings keeps the system flexible and reduces the risk that one coalition’s preferred sources become the only legitimate ones.
The same infrastructure can surface weights across time and across agents. Historical weight trajectories make visible how the relative valuation of particular theories, sources, or individuals has shifted within a field. What once carried heavy authority may now carry little; what was once marginal may now sit near the center. Seeing those changes as structured data rather than ambient background reveals patterns that are otherwise difficult to hold steadily in mind.
Personal weight visibility serves a different but related function. Most people carry implicit hierarchies of evidence and theoretical preference without having articulated them clearly. When those weights become visible, gaps between the position one believes one holds and the position one is actually operating from become harder to ignore. This reduces a particular form of self-misunderstanding and makes internal contradiction more expensive to maintain.
Comparative weight maps extend the same logic outward. Placing different people’s (or different eras’) weightings of the same material side by side creates a new diagnostic surface. Discrepancies between maps can be examined directly rather than remaining submerged inside arguments about conclusions. In long-running or emotionally charged domains, this often proves more clarifying than further exchange of evidence alone. The meta-level remains open. There is no pure view-from-nowhere weighting scheme. The criteria for what counts as good evidence, logical coherence, or predictive power must themselves stay subject to challenge and multi-agent contest. That openness is the safeguard against the infrastructure calcifying into a new dogmatism.
Residual Disagreements as Shared Work Surfaces
Most argumentative heat is not genuine dispute. It is verbal mismatch, status competition, or people talking past each other because their frameworks have never been surfaced. An infrastructure that can reliably separate load-bearing disagreements from motivational or linguistic noise would save enormous amounts of time and emotional energy.
The remaining hard problems can then be treated as open questions. Like difficult problems in mathematics, they become publicly visible, versioned, and available for anyone to advance. Residual discrepancies are no longer personal defeats. They are shared work surfaces. Progress on them is cumulative rather than repetitive. The system itself can flag the points where consensus ends and remaining disagreement begins. Humans remain free to contest the system’s assessment of what is “additive” or “useful". That feedback loop is what keeps the evaluation process itself from stagnating.
Queryable Thought and Continuity Across Time
A further step is the persistent, structured representation of a person’s evolving positions, evidence trails, and open questions. Once such a representation exists, context no longer evaporates between meetings. Short conversations and busy lives stop destroying the thread. A colleague can receive a contextualized bundle of relevant thought; their own agent can cross-reference it against their positions and surface only the genuine points of divergence or complementarity. AI-to-AI exchange serves human outcomes rather than replacing them.
The same continuity can hold the ongoing thread of a friendship or long collaboration. Human memory and attention are limited. A faithful external model of the shared history and the residual open questions reduces the cost of picking up where the relationship left off. The design requirement is honesty about inconsistency and change of mind. A smoothed, overly coherent representation would be a subtle distortion. The representation should preserve texture, not optimize for neatness.
Permanent Limits and Proper Use
None of this infrastructure eliminates subjectivity. No one ever has direct access to another person’s full rationale, private history, or calculus of meaning. Misunderstanding and partial projection remain endemic. Unscripted presence (the real-time micro-adjustments of mutual attention under genuine uncertainty) retains a non-substitutable character. High-fidelity artifacts improve the quality of real interaction when used as instruments. They become traps when treated as destinations.
The same distinction applies to the weighting schemes and residual-flagging mechanisms. They clear avoidable noise. They do not decide what a person should ultimately care about or commit to. When execution becomes cheap, the binding constraint shifts from the ability to generate or transmit arguments to the ability to form clear preferences and to revise without external forcing. Differences in those capacities become more rather than less visible.
The Expanded Domain
What the infrastructure changes is the cost structure of understanding. Once arguments are versioned, weights are made visible across time and across persons, and residual disagreements are treated as open problems rather than personal contests, a different kind of intellectual work becomes newly feasible.
Self-contradiction grows more expensive because one’s own weight map can be inspected. Mutual misunderstanding becomes more legible because competing weight maps can be placed side by side. Context no longer has to be laboriously rebuilt; it can travel with the people involved. The repetitive explanatory labor that once consumed attention can be reduced, leaving more capacity for the actual residual questions.
The permanent limits remain. Subjectivity is not abolished. Unscripted presence keeps its distinctive weight. No artifact can generate love or truth on behalf of the people using it. What changes is the background against which those limits operate. The tools do not remove the need for judgment, commitment, or clear wanting. They lower the price of clarity about where the real disagreements lie and about what one is actually prioritizing.
The highest-leverage decisions therefore shift. They become questions of which weights to declare, how honestly to make one’s own map visible, which residual problems are worth sustained attention, and with whom to share the resulting artifacts. Those choices still belong entirely to the people who inhabit the present. The infrastructure simply makes the consequences of those choices more visible and more cumulative than they have been before.
