With Bitcoin version 0.4.0, you could now protect your wallet with a passphrase for the very first time, adding a major security layer. This update also included bug fixes and a switch to a newer database version, making it incompatible with older clients. Genix adapted PEP 0001 of the Python programming language to Bitcoin, suggesting the name BEP โ€“ "Bitcoin Enhancement Proposal". Later, during correspondence in the bitcoin developers mailing list, Gavin Andresen proposed changing the abbreviation to BIP โ€“ "Bitcoin Improvement Proposal". The reason was that the abbreviation BEP was already used by the BitTorrent protocol โ€“ "BitTorrent Enhancement Proposal". image

The operator of the fraudulent scheme Bitcoin Savings and Trust (BTCST) was ordered to pay over $40 million in compensation and fines. The online organization that Shavers created and used to operate his Ponzi scheme allowed him to fraudulently extract more than 700,000 bitcoin from investors. image

This seizure became the first case of issuing a warrant not only to prove the defendant's guilt but also to check the computer equipment for the presence of bitcoin, which would serve as evidence of payment to conceal unlawful activity. image
