Money is literally already proof of work, so I'm not sure why it's such a hard concept for people to grasp. You do WORK, you're compensated for it, and the money you receive is the PROOF of the time, effort, and energy you spent to acquire it. It doesn't matter what work you did, or where, or when. That is the reason you can go to the bakery and buy a loaf of bread with it. Because you wouldn't have the proof if you didn't do the work. (or at least, that's how it's supposed to be in a world where money printers don't exist). Bitcoin is the same thing, except there is no one who controls the supply.
