Big social media's main advantage is centralized UX. Decentralized protocols will always struggle with inconsistency, the experience on one app can be drastically different from another. As a new person, your initial client choice could make it feel like you're living in a different universe. It's the price you pay I guess, but also a good reason to try new clients for more than a day and see how they actually feel!

Anyone from the 90s, remember Chat Rooms? Chat Rooms were awesome, because you HAD to chat and interact to make it fun, otherwise there was no point being there. Modern social media sucks because it's been turned in to a slop consumption machine. People can spend hours on it without needing to contribute anything. The best default "feed" is "latest with replies" - prioritize chatting!
