This morning I’m remembering that one time I was reading about ancient civilizations and noticed that one of my favorites, the Indus Valley Civilization, didn’t appear on the list that the LLM gave me. When I dug into why I discovered that a lot of times, if a clear hierarchy can’t be found(as in the Indus Valley) then it is decided that group of people were not a civilization… that’s right, researchers are out here equating hierarchy with civilization. Funny, cuz I’d argue for the opposite.

I’m so annoyed at there being so many people who hate psychology and therapy. I think y’all just don’t know what you are talking about. “Therapy just teaches you to blame others”: Not at all. Therapists are all like “let’s focus on what you can control.” “Therapists encourage people to go no-contact with their parents”: Not in my experience. I’ve never had a therapist do anything besides encourage me to accept my parents the way in which they are. “Everything in psychology is fake, it’s a reproducibility crisis”: It’s not a crisis, it’s how science works. You have a hypothesis, you test it, if your tests confirms your hypothesis then other scientists try to reproduce it. If they can’t reproduce it then it’s back to the drawing board, if they can reproduce it then its a confirmed theory. It would be a crisis if no one was doing the science and trying to reproduce findings. And many things in psychology are proven accurate/effective via reproducible studies. “Freud was a creep”: Yes! Also pretty much everyone knows that and a lot of his theories have been discredited. Pretty much no one is doing Freud style therapy anymore.

BIP110 fascinates me. Not from a technical perspective but from a psychological one. Technically it's always been clear, and yet I’ve watched very technical, highly intelligent people get trapped in it. We over value raw intelligence and seriously undervalue emotional maturity. Not getting caught in groupthink isn’t a matter of intelligence, it’s a matter of maturity and self awareness. Humans have a big fucking issue with mania and groupthink. We expect that in places like politics but we are often blind to it in fields like science and technology. But groupthink exists anywhere that humans exist. Many years ago I became a technological determinist and decided that the best way to improve the world was to build tech. But these days sometimes I think it might be a better idea to go get a degree in psychology.
