NOSTRGRAM UPDATE - CLOUDFLARE BOT MITIGATION AND PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS Hello again Nogs! It's update time. I already posted a bit about this update, but wanted to make a formal announcement for it and add to what I've said so far. NostrGram is now using CloudFlare for bot mitigation due to a large number of bots spamming the heck out of the site. VPN access was temporarily disabled while CloudFlare spun up and kicked in. Now it's active and the effects look really good so far. 🤞 There are some additional performance benefits of using CloudFlare, particularly for mobile users. I'm using CloudFlare's service to resize and compress images, which is already making a big difference in bandwidth usage. I had something like this built into NG itself, but it didn't work particularly well because a lot of the images weren't able to be compressed with the library I was using. CloudFlare is doing a much better job. I'm also using a few other CloudFlare compression options which are reducing bandwidth and speeding up delivery and performance. A big benefit to mobile users especially. All of this is possible thanks to you donating your ⚡, so thank you very much for your continued generosity. 🙏 I had someone ask where to donate, so wanted to make it clear: zapping any post by me (or using the Lightning icon on my Profile) is fine. CloudFlare clicked in really fast so I've restored VPN access. Query count is still multiples what I believe it should be so I'm still digging into it, but the load is manageable right now so access is open again. Thank you for being understanding while I work this out. Growing pains!

Ok, the issue appears to be bots using VPNs (secure proxies). For the time being I'm blocking VPNs until I figure out a way to identify the bad actors. Queries per second dropped from 120+ to about 10 -- that's how bad the bots are hitting the site. If you're using a VPN I apologize. NostrGram won't work for you while I work on this issue.

Putting some bot blocking code into NostrGram. If you get blocked by accident let me know. It's fairly rough at the moment. I'm just working to get the database load down so NG doesn't slow down for real people, but of course if you're not a bot I'll make sure you can get through!

NOSTRGRAM UPDATE - GREATLY IMPROVED FRIENDS+ AND FOLLOWING FEEDS Okay Nogs (I hear that's what NostrGram users should be called now -- I like it), big update to NostrGram. The Friends+ and Following feeds now load much faster and the Friends+ feed will search up to 20,000 connections (the people you follow plus the people they follow). I was hoping for 10,000 but was able to do a lot more. Who needs Global with a feed like Friends+??? The first time you load the Friends+ feed it will build your connections list. If you follow a bunch of new people you can rebuild your list by clicking the new icon on your Profile (the blue person with a plus sign). Try it out at

Ok NostrGram users (should I call you NGs, kind of like OGs -- or is there a better acronym/name? Give me your suggestions in the replies!) I'm about to dive into the code that should greatly improve the efficiency and performance of both the Following and *especially* the Friends+ feed. My goal is to allow Friends+ to load notes from a graph of up to 10,000 connections rather than the current limit of 2,000. I think I can do it. Will report back when I have something to show.

FYI to save load on the NostrGram database server, only the relays that respond first are getting added to the note records now. So if you don't see your relay in the list of relays in the Note Info (or below the note if you have that enabled in settings), it doesn't necessarily mean it didn't get the note, just that it responded more slowly. The nice side benefit of this is that you can see which relays are responding fastest because they'll be the ones shown in the relay list. Good info to have when deciding which relays to use.
