Today, 20 Nov, is St Edmund’s Day. In 869 the King of East Anglia was martyred by Vikings for refusing to renounce Christ. Shot with arrows and beheaded, he became England’s original patron saint. His shrine at Bury St Edmunds was once one of England’s greatest pilgrimage sites. image
