"June is baby animal season. Fledglings on the ground, fawns in the grass, rabbit nests in the lawn, turtle eggs in garden beds. They're all out right now โ and most of them don't need help.
The image covers nine things people do in June with good intentions that make things worse. A few of them will surprise you.
๐ฟ The fledgling hopping on the lawn left the nest on purpose. The fawn curled alone in the grass was hidden there by the doe. The shallow fur-lined nest that looks like dead grass has baby rabbits in it and the mother comes back at dusk.
The one most people don't think about: bare patches of soil that look empty often have native bee nests underneath. Mulching or tilling over them seals the bees in.
Nine panels. Nine mistakes. The kindest thing you can do for most of them is walk past.
If something is genuinely injured โ a licensed wildlife rehabber is the right call ๐พ"

"I think I could turn and live with animals, they are so placid and self-containโd,
I stand and look at them long and long.
They do not sweat and whine about their condition,
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,
Not one is dissatisfied, not one is demented with the mania of owning things,
Not one kneels to another, nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago,
Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth."
~ Walt Whitman, poet (31 May 1819-1892)

"The paper wasp on the porch nest turned toward you when you walked outside. Tomorrow, she'll respond differently to you than to your neighbor. She recognizes your face.
Her brain is smaller than a grain of rice. She processes faces the same way you do โ as a whole image, not as individual parts. She doesn't see "two eyes and a mouth." She sees a face. And she remembers it.
๐ฟ Paper wasps are the only insects documented to have this ability. The reason is their colony structure โ multiple queens share a nest in a dominance hierarchy. Recognizing who outranks whom prevents repeated fights. Facial recognition keeps the peace.
The same system works on humans. A wasp trained to distinguish between two faces learns faster with faces than with any other visual pattern. She remembers which individual threatened the nest and which one walked past without swatting.
๐พ What this means on the porch:
- The wasp watching you from the nest knows whether you've been aggressive before
- Calm, predictable movement near the nest produces a calmer response over time
- Swatting once changes how she responds to you specifically โ not to all humans
A brain smaller than a grain of rice, running facial recognition. She's been watching since you moved in ๐ฟ"
