But according to the police, the sellers were actually receiving counterfeit tokens designed to look like the real EURC. At first glance, the payment appeared to have gone through… even though the tokens did not have the expected value. The case stems from several reports received in August 2025. The two suspects were finally arrested on September 9, 2026. During a search of the 24-year-old suspect’s home, police also claim to have discovered firearms and drugs. This is a particularly interesting scam because it exploits a common misconception in the crypto world. Seeing “EURC” in a wallet is not enough to prove that you own the real stablecoin, rather than a lookalike created on another blockchain.
