I'm sure the news will have plenty to say, but veteran suicide, even if it's in a very political focused way is incredibly sad to me. I won't speak for others, as we are not a collective veteran community, but when I hear of such instances and some are not as public, it's a very dark spectre that reappears. I wrote this poem yeaterday before I read the letter. Where I try to capture this feeling, this overwhelming sadness, and what at least I'm doing to move on. I'm OK, but many are not and I wish they find their peace. #poetry
If you are into electronic music, check out this recording from the radio a few days ago. Justin, the author of A Radio Phonics Laboratory talks about the history and has some nice music here. It's a really nice history of engineers and musicians. So if you don't pick up the book, a highly recommend a listen. He made a cameo on the last issue with his voicemail, and I'm making a cameo here at the 1hr 21m mark or so.
I should just call these "the nostr tapes." 🤣 I finally had a chance here to look back. Six tapes this year, more to come for next! I appreciate everyone who contributed not only to the zine but with encouragement. Six months ago this was a crazy idea, and it still is! Thank you for trusting me with your attention. I'm still learning my way here but I feel like we are just getting started 💪 Here's to moar tapes in 2025!! 📼🎆🥂 image
The last issue of the year is on tape. Limited 20 copy run. 1/20 is reserved for @Sir HeyCitizen whose tracks sound great on slowly moving rust! I've got some more postcards last week so these tapes are going out today. I decided to reduce the run so I could double up on the FM radio kits, as it's useful to have spare components. image
One day, I will reach this level of "what did I just listen to." Which was exactly this, and I loved it. image
Silent night, holy night. An airstrike last night hit a school, killing at least a dozen children. All is calm, all is bright. Another assassination attempt this morning. Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child. The veteran suicide epidemic continues this year. Holy Infant so tender and mild. U.S. officials pledged today to send military advisors to the conflict. Sleep in heavenly peace. Nuclear missile modernization received additional funding this week. Sleep in heavenly peace. God bless our troops tonight, defending democracy, world-wide. ------------ #poetry This poem was inspired by Simon and Garfunkels “Silent Night / 7 O’Clock news” which mixed singing of silent night and news headlines from 1966. Around that same time, in his book Understanding Media, Marshall McLuhan was discussing how “if you remove the dateline from the newspaper, it’s a poem.” So, I wanted to apply this observation in my own poem. Lastly, I wished to update Simon and Garfunkels work a bit and make a piece that should, sadly, reflect the world for the next sixty years by using fictional headlines that probably will be true (and perhaps they already are).
Some started to leave a SSTV recording on 1-877-BIT-LOFI, which is an amazing idea. But it got cut off for some reason. So for the next few days I'll leave the machine in 3minute mode so people can leave longer messages.
Over the holiday, I'll start to work on the tapes for this release. I might cut back to a run of 20 however so everyone can get 2 FM radio kits. It's useful if you make a mistake when soldering. I know it's a bad time to go anywhere near a post office right now tho🥲 The next issue might roll quick because I'm doing the satellite skirmish on January 12th, thanks to @boo-bury and @lavish. And since that's about 20 minutes I'll probably devote a side of the tape to that live performance. Although... for the next issue, it will be a combo cassette and blu ray release because the skirmish performance is going to have some intense video effects.
I know it's not cool to talk about other socials, but there is a very nice poetry community of substack. This is the second time now I've done this poetry reading. This poem is crazy in all the good ways and I tried to bring it to life (not that it needed it). Also, the synth part came out really well I think. 🎹
