Samourai Wallet developer Keonne Rodriguez has been sentenced to 5 years in federal prison, the maximum allowed for conspiring to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business. Prosecutors say Samourai’s bitcoin mixing service laundered $237 million tied to drug trafficking, darknet markets, cyber intrusions, fraud, and murder-for-hire schemes. Rodriguez and co-founder William Lonergan Hill agreed to forfeit $237.8 million as part of their plea deals. Judge Denise Cote handed down the sentence after a one-hour hearing in Manhattan. Rodriguez’s legal team had requested a sentence of one year and one day.
