I was walking by a muddy stream, not really looking where I was going when I tripped over a log fallen across the path. As I was teetering on one foot, I noted that the log moved- not a log after all! Somehow my body performed the necessary adjustments to keep me on my feet, which then took charge of getting me the hell out of there. As I ran, I heard that unruly alligator grumbling behind me, “almost, almost.” ALMOSTR

"The liberal international order is slowly coming apart." That is the headline from a recent Economist editorial. They weren't asking a question, either. It was a clear statement of fact. Here is the prediction of what is to come: "The decline of the system threatens to slow that progress, or even throw it into reverse. Once broken, it is unlikely to be replaced by new rules. Instead, world affairs will descend into their natural state of anarchy that favours banditry and violence." And here is what we currently lack: "Without trust and an institutional framework for co-operation, it will become harder for countries to deal with the 21st century’s challenges" One promising solution is to adopt a global #bitcoin  standard. A fair protocol for the transfer of value. It might help us avoid WWIII. https://www.economist.com/leaders/2024/05/09/the-liberal-international-order-is-slowly-coming-apart

The tide has turned. The darkest days are behind us. We are starting to win. The department of energy survey: struck down and withdrawn. Milei in Argentina. More and more voices raised against DEI and ESG. The farmers of the EU. The truckers in Canada. And of course, our beloved Bitcoin, doing its ever lovin’ thang. Here’s to all of us. image

I’m sure this is an old comparison, but it struck me that proof of work in the bitcoin context is like a game with the following setup: 1. A game master- sets the rules and adjudicates the winner (in this case the software) 2. The arena where the game is played: a large sandbox filled with brown sand into which is placed one grain of green sand. 3. The players: entities with scoops. 4. The goal: find the green grain of sand 5. Open to as many players as want to join. 6. If the grain of green sand is found too quickly, the game master expands the sandbox (the difficulty adjustment) This doesn’t extend to two players finding the green grain at the same time. Anyway, I got a little more clarity by having a physical metaphor to think about.
