Bird of the day: Killdeer Killdeer get their name from the shrill, wailing kill-deer call they give so often. Eighteenth-century naturalists also noticed how noisy Killdeer are, giving them names such as the Chattering Plover and the Noisy Plover. Gravel rooftops attract Killdeer for nesting, but can be dangerous places to raise a brood. # birdstr image

Bird of the day: Mute Swan The mute swan's name comes from the fact that it's less vocal than other swan species, such as the whooper swan that makes the distinctive 'whooping' call in flight. The mute swan is also the largest of the swan species in the UK, and in fact the second largest species of waterfowl in the world. #birds image

@Dawn this one goes out to you. BIRD OF THE DAY: Thekla’s Lark Some larks have heavy bills (reaching an extreme in the thick-billed lark) for cracking seeds open, while others have long, down-curved bills, which are especially suitable for digging. Larks are the only passerines that lose all their feathers in their first moult. #birdstr image
