Daily Roman History: Emperor Hadrian, third of the so called "Five Good Emperors", considered himself quite the polymath. Of particular interest to him was architecture, several of his projects remain until this day, such as the rebuilt Patheon in Rome, as well as his mausoleum. From this interest developed a rivalry of sorts with his imperial predecessors chief architect, Apollodorus of Damascus. This rivalry came to a head after Hardrian was crowned Emperor and showed Apollodorus his personal designs for a Temple of Venus and Roma, thinking to show Apollodorus he was no longer needed. Instead, the desogn was harshly critized for its scale, direction relative to the Sun, and "the statues being too big that if they wished to get up and walk around they would bump their head on the ceiling". For his impunity Apollodorus was exiled and shortly after executed. #history image

Daily Roman History: After the murder of the Emperor Caligula by his bodyguards the murderers realized they may not have thought this through entirely. Since Caligula was young he had not named an heir and this could lead to a power vacuum and most likely war. Thinking fast, they searched the Imperial palace for the only remaining member of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, dear old stuttering uncle Claudius. Allegedly being found cowering behind some window dressings he was taken and declared emperor before anyone even knew Caligula was dead. Thinking they had selected a malleable and weak puppet-ruler, Claudius proved to be one of the more competent Emperors Rome ever had. Firstly punishing those who were responsible for the death of the former Emperor, he lead an effective administration, personally presided over legal disputes, and began the successful conquest of Britain over his 13 year reign. #history image

GOOD MORNING โ˜€๏ธ Bird of the day: Sea Gull The gulls have a worldwide cosmopolitan distribution. They breed on every continent, including the margins of Antarctica, and are found in the high Arctic as well. They are less common on tropical islands, although a few species do live on islands such as the Galapagos and New Caledonia. Many species breed in coastal colonies, with a preference for islands, and one species, the grey gull, breeds in the interior of dry deserts far from water. Considerable variety exists in the family and species may breed and feed in marine, freshwater, or terrestrial habitats. Where I live these birds will rip open your garbage and make a mess all over the road. #birdstr image

Daily Roman History: In the death throes of the republic two men were in constant competition for power, Gaius Marius, and Lucius Cornelius Sulla. Marius, wanting to claim his prophesied seven consulship, lead a coup while Sulla, the rightly elected consul for that year, was leading an army in the east. Upon hearing this Sulla turned the army around and marched back on Rome. As he neared the city Sulla did the unprecedented action of leading an army past the historic boundary of the city, an act tantamount to sacrilege. By this time Marius had already fled to the ruins of Carthage and died shortly after. Sulla went on to lead a bloody purge of Marian supporters. One such supporter was the nephew-in-law of the ousted Marius. Though supporters of the family were able to get leniency for the young man Sulla said of him "In that boy I see many a Marius." This 'boy' was the young Julius Ceasar, who would indeed outdo his uncle and essentially bring an end to the republic. #history image
