Daily Roman History: One of Republican Romes most frequent thorns, a Pontus King called Mithridates VI, was known as "The poison king" due to his microdosing of various poisons to build an immunity. Ultimately this would prove a bane as upon Rome's conquest of Pontus he tried to kill himself using a poison kept in his royal ring, however his immunity only caused pain and led to him being stabbed to death by his bodyguard. #history image

GOOD MORNING ☀️ #NOSTR Bird of the day: Bonelli's eagle Like most birds of prey, Bonelli's eagle displays reverse sexual dimorphism as the female is larger than the male to the contrary of most other kinds of birds, in this case she may average about 10% larger overall. Total length in fully-grown eagles of the species can vary from 55 to 74 cm (22 to 29 in). Wingspan in males can vary from 143 to 163 cm (4 ft 8 in to 5 ft 4 in) while that of the female may vary from 156 to 180 cm (5 ft 1 in to 5 ft 11 in). #birdstr image

Hello 👋 #Nostr I’ve been posting about birds and Roman history since joining but I think I’m going to start posting something a little more personal to me. I’m a long distance runner and I really enjoy training to achieve the goals I set out for myself. Last year I ran the Chicago Marathon in sub 3 hours and qualified for Boston. Which I was pleased with because it was my first marathon. I’m currently at the beginning stages of training for the 2024 season. If you’re interested in running or would like to learn more about it feel free to follow along on my training journey or ask me any questions. I’m always game for helping newcomers to the sport. Yesterday was my first day back at it since October because I like to hibernate during the winter months 😂 #running image

Daily Roman History: Two fun Pompey Magnus tidbits. First, after returning from conquering almost the entire eastern Mediterranean coast the senate wanted to humble Pompey the Great by giving him a near impossible task: rid the Mediterranean Sea of pirates. All of them. Not one to shy from a challenge Pompei accomplished this goal. In three months. Second, most marriages in Rome were for political gain or wealth transfer. Pompey's marriage to Julius Ceasars daughter, Julia, proved an oddity in that they seemed to actually enjoy each other company. This lead to ridicule of Pompey "Hey, get a load of Pompey, he actually LOVES his wife, lmao" #history image

Daily Roman History: Emperor Nero was a bit of a weird one. He thought he was an amazing actor/athlete/musician. He was not. After bribing officials to postpone the Olympic games a year so he could compete he participated in a 10 horse chariot race. Despite being thrown off at the beginning and leaving the race he was crowned victor. The officials based this on the fact he WOULD have won if he had, ya know, finished. After his death his name was removed from the list of winners. #history image

GOOD MORNING NOSTR☀️ Bird of the day: White-crested laughingthrush The white-crested laughingthrush is a popular caged bird species, and it is likely that individuals which escaped or were voluntarily released during religious practices are the cause for the expansion of G. l. diardi's range to Malaysia and Singapore in the 1970s–1980s. The exotic bird trade has brought it to the UK and US as well, but no wild populations have been reported there. image

Daily Roman Facts: Emperor Valerian has the ignoble claim of being the first emperor captured alive by the enemies. Taken prisoner after losing the Battle of Edessa in 260AD against the Sassanid Empire lead by Shapur I, he would live the remainder of his life as a prisoner of the foreign power. His life during that time is one of two possibilities, either he lived a rather comfortable, if obscure, life as a high ranking prisoner, eventually dying of old age. Or he was routinely humiliated by the Sassanid court even being used as a stool for the King to enter and exit his litter. This telling has him being flayed alive and stuffed for display in the audience chamber of Shapur. #history image

Bird of the day: European bee-eater This bird breeds in open country in warmer climates. As the name suggests, bee-eaters predominantly eat insects, especially bees, wasps, and hornets. They catch insects in flight, in sorties from an open perch. Before eating a bee, the European bee-eater removes the sting by repeatedly hitting the insect on a hard surface. It can eat around 250 bees a day. #birdstr image

Daily Roman Fact: One of the Empires most ineffectual Emperors, Honorius, left the governing of the his half of the Empire to capable advisors and generals. He amused himself with various hobbies and parties. One such hobby was keeping various birds, his favorite of which was a chicken named Rome after the old capital. So enamoured with this chicken was he that when brought news that the city of Rome had 'perished' to a Visigothic army in 410AD he was besides himself with grief, thinking his pet dead. Upon finding out it was merely the namesake of the Empire and not his beloved chicken he was relieved and passed the issue onto someone else. #history image

Bird of the day: Blue Jay I absolutely love this bird. I see them all the time in Newfoundland where I’m from and they are also my favourite baseball team! The blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) is a passerine bird in the family Corvidae, native to eastern North America. It lives in most of the eastern and central United States; some eastern populations may be migratory. Resident populations are also in Newfoundland, Canada; breeding populations are found across southern Canada. It breeds in both deciduous and coniferous forests, and is common in residential areas. Its coloration is predominantly blue, with a white chest and underparts, and a blue crest; it has a black, U-shaped collar around its neck and a black border behind the crest. Males and females are similar in size and plumage, and plumage does not vary throughout the year. Four subspecies have been recognized. #birdstr image
