Daily Roman Facts: Marcus Valerius Corvus received his unique agnomen while on campaign against the Gauls in Northern Italy in 349BC. Prior to a battle a hulking Gallic warrior challenged any man on the Roman side to single combat. With consuler approval Valerius accepted. As the two approached a raven landed on Valerius' shoulder and aided him through the battle by attacking the opponents face and eyes with Valerius ultimately slaying his foe. After the battle was won for Rome Corvus, meaning 'raven' in Latin, was added to his name. #history

GOOD MORNING 🌅 Bird of The Day: Tennessee warbler The Tennessee warbler is 11.5 cm (4.5 in) long, has a 19.69 cm (7.75 in) wingspan, and weighs roughly 10 g (0.35 oz). The breeding male has olive back, shoulders, rump and vent. The flight feathers are brownish-black. It has a slate gray neck, crown and eyeline. The underside is a gray-white. The female is similar to the male, but is much duller and is tinged with yellow and olive overall, especially on the underside. The Tennessee warbler has long wings, short tail and a thin, pointy bill. This bird can be confused with the red-eyed vireo, which is larger, moves more deliberately and sings almost constantly. The orange-crowned warbler can also look similar, but lacks the white eyebrow, is greyer-brown above and has yellow undertail coverts. #birdstr

Daily Roman Facts: Marcus Licinius Crassus, of First Triumvirate fame, was known as the richest man in Rome. One trick he used to gain his wealth involved his own fire brigade. At the time Rome didn't have a public fire fighting force, so if a fire occured Crassus would show up with his crew and offer to buy the burning building at an incredibly low ball offer. If the tenant accepted he would put out the fire and add it to his real estate empire. If not he would sit by as it burned to the ground, and then offer to buy the smoldering land for an even lower offer. #history

GOOD MORNING ☀️ Bird of The Day: Ruddy Duck Ruddy ducks were imported into the UK in 1948 by conservationist Sir Peter Scott. As a result of escapes from wildfowl collections in the late 1950s, they became established in Great Britain, from where they spread into Europe. By the year 2000, the population had increased to around 6,000 individuals. This duck's aggressive courting behavior and willingness to interbreed with the endangered native white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala), of southern Europe, caused concern amongst Spanish conservationists. Due to this, a controversial scheme to extirpate the ruddy duck as a British breeding species started; there have also been culling attempts in other European countries. #birdstr

Daily Roman Fact: The early reign of the ineffectual Emperor Nero was frequently being meddled with by his mother Agrippina the Younger. This came to a head when it came to light she may be setting up a cousin to take over for Nero that would be more compliant with her suggestions. Due to this apparent betrayal Nero decided to have her killed. However, even on that Nero bungled. According to sources he tried to have her poisoned three times, rigged the ceiling above her bed to fall on her while sleeping, and even managed to involve her in a shipwreck only to find out later she swam to shore. Eventually, he gave up pretenses of "accidental" death and just hired an assassin to stab her. That one worked. According to legend her final words were "Smite my Womb" #history

GOOD MORNING ☀️ Bird of The Day: Black-chinned Hummingbird This species uses diving displays (40–60 ft (12–18 m) dives) for territory defense and during courtship, producing an audible sound (a trill) as air passes through their feathers during the plunge. In courtship, males perform "pendulum" display, flying back and forth in wide U-shaped arcs, making whirring sounds on each dive. They also buzz back and forth in short flights in front of perched females. Black-chinned hummingbirds can exhibit territorial behavior around feeders as well as at other small feeding sites, becoming more defensive during breeding season. However, if there are numerous individuals in an area as well as multiple food sources, this species shows less territoriality. #birdstr
