The #Australian Government just announced they’re going to ban children from social media, and their Digital ID system is being rolled out after the Digital ID Act passed the Australian Parliament earlier this year. Government overreach and control through #surveillance mirrors the oppressive tactics used by authoritarian regimes, like the Soviet Union, to stifle dissent and monitor citizens. The concern is that increasing surveillance, justified under the guise of protecting children or enforcing #security, can lead to significant curtailments of individual #freedom and #anonymity, echoing the power structures of past regimes that sought control over all aspects of life. The #Gulags serve as a historical reminder of the dangers of unchecked state power, and the implementation of Digital ID and online surveillance could be seen as a modern-day parallel, where the state and corporations could potentially misuse data and remove #privacy in a similar bid for control.
