Segundo a publicação, “o aviso mais oportuno para muitas das grandes economias do mundo vem do Brasil”, um país que, apesar de exibir crescimento razoável, banco central independente e um orçamento primário quase equilibrado, está sendo pressionado por uma dívida cara em um ambiente de juros muito altos. Para a revista britânica, o caso brasileiro funciona como uma “parábola” para economias avançadas que começam a mostrar sinais de “brasilificação”: instituições sob pressão, inflação mais sensível e gastos crescentes com previdência e saúde em sociedades envelhecidas.
A Economist alerta que, se esse cenário empurrar os juros para cima nos países ricos, os dilemas atuais de orçamento poderão parecer menores no futuro. E conclui que o Brasil pode enfrentar uma escolha “agonizante” entre “uma austeridade profunda e uma espiral assustadora de juros sobre a dívida”, caso não avance em reformas capazes de reequilibrar as contas públicas.
