La Campanella is one of the most iconic pieces in the repertoire. Liszt composed it after attending a Paganini concert, whose violin technique seemed to defy the laws of physics. The idea was simple and brutal: to prove that the piano could also reach this level of demand. The result was a work full of extreme leaps, high-speed trills, and a melody that sounds light but hides tremendous difficulty.

The piece gained fame precisely for this illusion: the listener hears something delicate, almost playful, while the performer faces one of the greatest precision tests in the repertoire. Each octave leap must be exact. Each trill must maintain clarity. And the lightness of the melody cannot be lost, even under extremely high muscular tension.

Here, Sofia Ros brings La Campanella to the accordion. And this changes everything. The piano has a sustain pedal, which allows notes to resonate while the hands move. The accordion does not. Each sound depends on continuous bellows pressure, requiring coordination between hands, arms, and breathing. The absence of natural resonance forces the performer to recreate the piece’s brilliance only with air control and millimetric articulation.
