For your enjoyment this weekend, a new, special video cut of Erik Satie's beautiful Gnossienne 4. The Gnossiennes and Gymnopedies are rich in subtle contrasts. They feel as old as time itself yet strangely contemporary, tender yet detached, structured yet floating. For me they are all about creating atmosphere using the dynamic interplay between sound and silence, closeness and distance, warmth and coolness. It's an aesthetic I recognise in traditional Chinese art which favours suggestion over certainty. These contrasts come to the surface even more clearly on guitar, which excels in capturing fleeting nuances, shifting colours and almost whispered intimacy. Two guitars feature in my arrangement, the top line played on a guitar by Australian Luthier Greg Smallman, with the supporting line on a seven string guitar by Oxfordshire luthier Paul Fisher. You can listen to the the studio recording on my album Chapeau Satie, on all the usual streaming platforms.
