More than 80% of people surveyed say they follow the news because they “want to know what is going on in the world around them.” It’s not just that people expect the news to inform them about what’s happening in the world — most think that it does. And this is what media outlets themselves promise to do. However, as we discuss in a recent article, the media focuses on just a fraction of our world. We investigate this through the lens of health, looking at causes of death in the United States and reporting on these causes in the @nytimes, @washingtonpost, and @foxnews. Our point is *not* that we should want or expect the media’s coverage to perfectly match the real distribution of deaths, although we’d argue that it would be better if it were less skewed. We wrote this article so that you, the reader, are aware of the significant disconnect between what we often hear and what actually happens. The first map shows the nearly 40 countries that allow same-sex partners to marry, affirming their right to love and form a family. However, the majority of countries don’t recognize same-sex marriage, or outright ban it. The second map shows that same-sex relationships are legal in many countries, but not everywhere. In some countries, same-sex relationships are against the law, and can be punished with prison or even death. The third map shows the 43 countries that allow same-sex partners to adopt a child together. Yet most countries either only allow LGBT+ people to adopt individually or forbid them to adopt altogether. The fourth map shows the countries that allow people to change their gender on official documents without restrictions. In dozens of countries, people must first have a medical diagnosis or undergo surgery, and in many, changing one’s gender on official documents is illegal. The last map shows the Equaldex legal equality index, which captures the extent to which those who identify as LGBT+ have the same rights as straight and cisgender people. In the chart, we see spending in different categories, such as defense, health, and education, as a share of total government spending. This is shown for a selection of OECD countries. For some categories, such as public services, the share spent is fairly similar across countries: it ranges from a low of 9% in Japan to a high of 15% in the US and Finland. Public services includes things like the running of core government functions, foreign aid, and paying interest on government debt. In other categories, such as social protection, the difference across countries is much larger: from a low of 21% in the US to a high of 44% in Finland. Social protection includes things like pensions, unemployment benefits, disability support, and other benefits.
