New brooder build in anticipation for new chicks in a couple of weeks. Start with a 50gallon tub. We're gonna cut a section out of the top and then cover that opening in chicken wire. image Mark out how large you want your opening to be. I just made use of the existing lines on t he lid. image Next cut this out. I've seen people drill holes at the corners and then run a jigsaw around but I don't particularly care for the smell of of hot blades melting plastic so I just took my time with a box cutter. image Alright next cut a section of chicken wire / hardware cloth big enough to cover the opening with padding over each side. You're going to drill holes and attach the chicken wire to the lid with zip ties. At first I thought I'd drill all the holes and then attach but when I got about halfway through I realized that my chicken wire pattern didn't work well for that. So I started drilling and attaching as I moved around the lid. image On one

Raising #chickens isn't all fun and fluffy birds and nearly free eggs. One of ours recently got out and got torn up bad enough that I had to finish the job so she wouldn't suffer. First time I've had to do that. Pretty hard on the kids too since we don't have that many birds. It's a good lesson, circle of life and all that, but not fun. But new chicks will be in soon so we get to start again which is kinda nice.

Pretend I know nothing but basic HTML/CSS (mostly true). How would I go about making a progressive web app with inputs that go to a database with some basic Excel-type functions? Essentially I'm doing some manual tracking in a spreadsheet right now and would rather it be a nice touchscreen interface that anyone in the family can use from their phone

image Really enjoying this staycation. I get to fully appreciate things like collecting eggs and being outside instead of existing under fluorescent lights. #chickenostr

I use coffee grounds as bedding for my chicken coop. It cuts down on the poop smell, makes scooping more like cat litter and helps keep bugs out. Once or twice a week I go by Starbucks and pick up used coffee grounds because they bag them separate from their other trash. I put them out on a tarp to dry for a couple of days and then sift out the chunks (and leaves that landed in the mean time). I use a sifter that I got from Murdoch's that sits in a 5gallon buck which works really well. Then I pour the fine sifted grounds in the coop. I used to mash up the leftover chunks and repeat the drying/sifting process, but as much coffee as Starbucks puts out, it's not an efficient use of my time I now just dump the chunks into the pen and let the girls scratch through it for enrichment.

Lost the private key for the Bottomshelf account but I've decided just to be myself for a while. Maybe I'll post about Bitcoin, maybe I'll post about chickens. Who knows?
